I still have nForce 2 stuff, and it plays games really well, at 1024x768.

You can underclock the cpu and knock the fan speeds right down and it'll be quiet.

Bet you can find a Shuttle or an X Cube or similar, all for about £100.
thanks Zak, just what I was thinking - I've seen Shuttle's kicking about mates' houses and think I might check out the 'bay for the bits I need - I fancy building one as it can't be more difficult than a timing belt of wheel bearing... can it?

    how do you underclock btw?

Yeah building a PC is easy

Underclocking is usually done in the bios by lowering the FSB or multiplier.. I would have thought the fan speeds would lower themselves with less load, too

is that £100 for the case? or an old-ish school system w/o ancils?

should get most of it for that....small form factors have vid/sound etc power built in.
just need small chip and hard drive normally.

PM David...he must have something somewhere.

They've been unlocked downwards for ages, it's the power saving mode.

there's a good article in a recent Autocar about the language of petrol heads, and how unintelligible it is to outsiders...

i feel that way now, about computers...

    :completely discombobulated:

how does one unlock (downwards) a multiplier while underclocking?

I wouldn't worry about underclocking. Set of quiet fans (and set their speed to adaptive in the BIOS) and it'll be fine

All Athlon XP Tbred/Barton processors prior to about week 0330 have unlocked multipliers. You don't even need to do a pencil mod or anything.

Personally I tend to undervolt more than I underclock, although my motherboard is now so flaky that at the moment I'm doing both (XP2000 at 1.47GHz, 1.4V ).
