    Guide to UD and FAQ

    What is it?

Most computers aren't using all their computing power at a given time. Even when you are engaged in a game, creating graphics, surfing the web, you may only be employing a fraction of your machine's available computing power. United Devices has built a small, secure software agent for individuals to download to their machine that can save this wasted power and put it to use.
If you aren't running any other Distributed Computing project, then this really is a good idea, most people seem to do the Cancer project, which aims at finding / working on a cure for Cancer, but there are other projects, such as Smallpox (anti-terrorism) and other previous ones. You can choose which project you want to do if you modify your device manager / profile settings on the grid member site. Logon here:

    https://www.grid.org/services/home.htm

Where do I get the client?

    www.grid.org
    or more specifically :
    http://www.grid.org/download/gold/download.htm

there's also a getting started guide here:
    http://www.grid.org/about/gs/index.htm

    and some more FAQs here:
    http://www.grid.org/download/gold/download.htm

Are there any utilities for it?

Yes, here's one called udmon, that will cache the Work Unit's (WUs) for you: udmon

Can it be run as a service?

Official answer here: No, this is explained here : link
Guide written by Timmy here : link

Where do I join the Hexus Team? Where are the team stats?
    http://www.grid.org/services/teams/t...5-88762326378B

    Is there a Mac/Linux client?
No, sorry, there isn't an end user Linux or Mac client. There's just the client for: Microsoft Windows 98, ME, NT 4.0 (SP5+), 2000, XP

Re: Linux - maybe this will help: http://www.asmirnov.org/os/ud/ - it suggests you try wine or crossover office in order to run UD/Grid on Linux.

What are the minimum specs it will run on?

Microsoft Windows 98, ME, NT 4.0 (SP5+), 2000, XP with at least a Pentium, 48mb, 600mb HD with 100mb available, 8-bit graphics at 800x600, and an Internet connection.

How long should a Work Unit take?

It tends to depend on your PC specifications, but as a rough guide, on my XP2400 / 256mb DDR 133/266 / Windows 2000 machine it's taken 4hours and 41 minutes to do 41%.

    Can I speed it up?

I tend to disable the screensaver after install as I would imagine that this would speed it up as it's not having to draw a pretty screensaver.

Is it possible to be a member of two teams at once?

You would need to maintain seperate UD/Grid accounts to do this.

If i have more than one machine, will all the work units be added together and added to team hexus?

Yes, as long as you use the same username and password on all machines that you installed Grid on - and as long as you used that username to join the Hexus UD team.

Will it break or damage my pc?

No, not in itself. If you have inadequate cooling, and the weather's hot, then you may have some issues, but if you do, then there could be something wrong with your PC that should be fixed anyway. In which case the Hexus Computer Hardware and Overclocking Forum will be able to help.

Given that I've been doing Seti for years, I've forgotten my password for it and the email address it was registered to lapsed in 99, I reckon I might throw my efforts this way. Got a few servers doing nowt else in the cellar O;-)

That said, I could split projects between PCs O;-) The original one I had was distributed.net

If you sign up to UD, then join the Hexus UD team, then install grid on all your pcs, and set the software up with the username you joined the hexus ud team with, then yes.
