    Unhappy very difficult car insurance

    hi
I'm in need of some help, got a bit of a tricky problem.
I'm 19 and have been driving since summer 2005, but haven't driven since summer 2006 and am about to purchase a 2001 mercedes s320cdi and need to get it insured. (third party only, car is insurance group 16). The problem is that last summer I wrote off my 6 month old VW polo in an accident, was comprehensively insured and cost the insurers about 4000 pounds, so the insurance for my new car is going to be astronomical. Have tried getting quotes from confused.com without mentioning the claim and got a quote for 2500, but can't get a quote when I do mention it. (would have to call 100's of companies taking 100's of hours) So basically my question is does anyone who knows a bit about insurance have any idea what sort of price I am looking at? Any help or advice would be really appreciated. thanks
    Dan

Agreed. If you've had a crash as a young driver don't be getting anything like that kind of car.

Im 18 and insured on a 2005 Merc E270 (started insurance when I was 17), but throught my Dad's company insurance policy as its a company car. None of the common insurance companies would even look at me. With that accident you have had I doubt that you are likely to get any insurance without paying extortionate amounts to a specialised company for young drivers.

I think it would be worth you to do the pass plus test as you would probably save a lot more than the test/lessons costs in the long run with such a high insurance. Also, specialised insurance companies for young drivers sometimes take into account the mark you got in your theory test, and number of minors in practical test, so if you did well in the tests you might be able to get the quote lower.

But in general I agree that you may want to reconsider the car choice and get something slightly less powerfull and it should make it slightly easier to get insurance (but will still probably be difficult getting an acceptable quote tbh).

you cant get a quote when u detail your claim as your uninsurable, basically a very high risk and as it cost the insurance i assume its your fault?

i dare say the quote will be in excess of the value of the merc new to try and put you off.

fiat panda time bud, class 1 insurance and it should be under 5k

I'm surprised you managed to get a quote at all on that car with only third party cover. Many insurance companies won't touch cars more than £4,000 unless it is fully comp.

no mainstream insurer will cover a 19 year old with an accident history and little experience on an IG16 vehicle

i had enough troubler getting a quote for IG11 at age 22, eventually was told £4400 TPFT on a £3000 car, and unsurprisingly decided not to bother

    precisely....

tbh if you can afford to buy an S class, you can afford to insure an S class.

If you cant afford to buy one outright, and are Hire Purcahsing it, you'll find you need to be Fully Comp as part of the HP agreement (quite sensibly)

How about a nice Polo......see if you can suss where you wnet wring last time?

If you've got all that dough to blow on a car, why not get a normal car and take up track racing, or rallying with a competiton car?

Buy a less powerful car and insure it for 2 years. Don't crash it. Then consider getting that car.

    Heh, Zakky has a point.

The other way to reduce insurance costs is to look into some sort of advanced training. Some have already mentioned pass plus, but if you get a smaller car for now, do your advanced test, and then get an S Class, the crash may be less of an issue.

    Jus' a thought anyhow...

first off thanks for all the replys.
J4MES I don't. But it's going to cost you faarsands. You probably need to find a 'specialist' insurance co. which deals with a. young drivers b. total losses (did you get any points too?) c. rich kids

    good luck..
Didn't get any points, have a clean licence.
I'm not a rich kid. I started brokering electronics goods two years ago and have worked hard and had a lot of luck.

Howard Why are you buying such a car? As James said you'll have to find a special insurance company that will touch you, especially on that car, after you've had an accident. Frankly if you can crash a Polo, getting behind the wheel of a powerful Mercedes is a bad idea

I'm buying one because I love cars and think this one is fantastic.
My accident was caused by my very drunk friend who thought it would be funny to do a hand break skid by pulling it on when I was doing 40mph on a very narrow country road. the car swerved, hit a grass bank, front flipped and landed on the roof. thankfully we were wearing seatbelts and escaped with cuts and bruises. Needless to say he's not my friend anymore. Getting it 3rd party because it would probably be a lot cheaper than fully comp. + I wouldn't claim again if it was because then I probably wouldn't get insured again until I was 110 years old.

staffsMike Forgetting the fact you won't get a reasonable quote on that car at your age..especially as you've already had an accident..why on gods green earth do you want an s-class mercedes?? lol

How much were you planning on spending on just the car?
Who wouldn't like to have had an S class when they were 19?
Upto 20 grand. Because of the new model coming out the depreciation on the old style is huge. (I don't like the new ones anyway, they look like tanks and have silly looking wheel arches)

Accident wasn't my fault. Where it went wrong was that front wheel drive cars don't react well when the handbreak is pulled going over 30mph lol
Will definitely look into doing advanced tests and passplus etc.

Does anyone think I'll be able to get it third party for under 10grand? thanks again
