    Re: First car..bit of advice?

Not going to get a spud coming back saying he has bought a polo

However..when I go back on friday I *will* make another comparison on the 1.4 vs the 1.1, and spend some more time checking the differences, as some of what you say about its power for the weight does concern me a little. I am not at all convinced by the reliability problems, because a) you get them with any car, b) the internet and especially forums are totally biased and doesnt give a true representation and c) for a car thats sold in the numbers the 206 has there are bound to be lots with issues, but its something i'm happy to take the risk with for a couple of years before I change to something different.

Will see if the extra money a 1.4 will cost me in insurance, running costs and initial cost [to get one with good milage] is worth it though

Peugoet are up there with the most unreliable cars.

Its no biased, i own one and my mum has had the car in question, and you may get them with any car but more so with these.

But obviously you want to have the ar because of its look rather than its function..

No, you don't. Chose wisely and you need not suffer many reliability problems. Chose Peugeot, and you will.

, b) the internet and especially forums are totally biased and doesnt give a true representation
I'm sorry but the 206 specifically is a car which will cause you problems.

and c) for a car thats sold in the numbers the 206 has there are bound to be lots with issues
The Ford Focus has sold more units than the 206. There are nowhere near as many problems.

    Re: First car..bit of advice?

I've had a quick look for some independant 206 thinking.

Honest John's initial overview paints a pretty good picture with the 206
"Peugeots generally had below average warranty repair costs in 2003 Warranty Direct Reliability index (index 86.25 v/s lowest 31.93). "
Of course that's cost based. If you're replacing light bulbs every month it's cheap but not reliable!

However I think this tells a much clearer story:

"19th from bottom for reliabilty in Auto Express 2002 reader survey of 100 models. 17th from bottom out of 137 models in 2003 Top Gear survey. Came 13th = from bottom in 2005 JD Power/What Car Survey of 23,000 cars reg Sep 2002 to Aug 2003 with satisfaction score of 73.9%."
In otherwords, no it's not terrible but there are more cars better than it than worse.

But of course if a Peugeot 206 breaks down, it will cost less to repair than a BMW 750Il.

This means even if the 206 breaks down 400 times for every one the 750 breaks, technically speaking the 206 has 'lower than average repair costs'.

    Re: First car..bit of advice?

Well I went back on friday, and convinced the dealer to let me take the 206 I linked earlier on a 24 hour test drive, so I could see what it would really be like on motorways and in traffic.

I can't see what you are all on about with regard to the engine being slow - its quicker than the yaris i've driven for most of the past 4 years (ignoring the van i've been driving recently), and is perfectly happy crusing at 70mph on the motorways, or overtaking other cars...and its great in the towns too, nippy enough for me. (this was with 3 ppl in the car)

Its obv not going to win any races but I really don't see the need for a faster engine other than either a kudos factor or a more 'thrilling' ride..Its very comfortable for me being a shorter driver, with great seats (it has the uprated cloth seats), great looks, and perfectly satifactory speeds. In short I loved it and went back and bought it.

I fully expect to be flamed for my choice but tbh I don't care Its a lovely car with no faults [as yet] and plenty of little gadets inside (eg follow me home lights, automatic locking when you drive off and many more), and suits me down to the ground.

On the reliability front well we'll see on that one won't we I really doubt I will have as many problems as you guys seem to suggest, even with this being a multiplexed model..its newer than the models with the cutout problems, and the dealer has upgraded the software on the BSI computer to the latest version so hopefully won't have any electrical/computer problems.

    A quick final pic

edit: also looking through the pitstop forum - almost every thread about dodgy peugeots is about the 306, not the 206...

You know nothing about pug and your saying you doubt you will get problems like we say?

    good luck with it.

I couldnt bring myself to drive a 1.1 that cost anymore than 900 quid but thats my view.

It does look nice in black, and hope it serves you well
