best advice i got for my 328 was to park it pointing uphill while i bled the system

PITA to prime, but a very good cooling system when its working right.

Err, with the greatest of respect, you've not got a clue. The car probably wouldn't drive the same again, repaired or otherwise.

I have mine blow the Header tank lid off once (Pre BMW Landie TD). It was singly handidly the scariest thing that ever happened. I had to coast down a hill to a farm where I could put water back in but I would NEVER actually put the truck under any power with no water in, engines are fragile and expensive to fix...

And they wouldn't repair it. If it was driven when know to be overheating then there would be no warranty cover (obviously prooving this would be hard).

Not really, you'd be surprised what an ECU logs these days...

Oh yeah you could prove it that way but still that wouldn't stop a warranty claim. The customer could just feign ignorance and that they hadn't noticed etc, BMW would be hard pushed not to have to foot the bill.

Re: Cooper sworks Odd coolant problem. Help/Advice needed

    Soooooooo,

got the motor back this evening. Got a call this morning telling me it was ready! They changed the radiator and bottom connecting pipes. All brand spanking new. I knew it was (leaking letting air in) slowly but surely! All is fine so far, I think I'll be buying that extended warranty again next year

    Thanks everyone for the help.

This time treat it a bit kinder, if that dial moves stop and find out why before you boil it.

It'll be logging RPM without a doubt, some log speed directly - can't say about a MINI though.

It is a BMW ECU, they log everything from your speed to sneezing. The amount of errors we would get on a printout from any one car was astonishing.

Even if it deosnt log your speed - it will be logging your RPM, and what gear your in which = speed.

Re: Cooper sworks Odd coolant problem. Help/Advice needed

I know of a pool car VW Sharan that was having problems, went back to the dealers and they looked at the ECU logs and found it had been living on the limiter in 3rd for some serious time. They refused to repair it...
