Re: HiFi Speakers in a car?

Well I got my subwoofer working last night It's temporarily in the passenger footwell I'm not sure whether I even need my rear speakers now at all - they are cheap rubbish at the moment and the bass sounds disconnected and delayed compared to the rest of the music. Whereas the subwoofer sounds tight and in time with the rest of the music, which is a bonus!

I was thinking of maybe getting rid of the 6x9s in the back parcel shelf, and maybe putting in some more of these JBL 6x4s, and then they'd match the front speakers both physically and sonically, and just rely on the sub for the bass. (plus the 6x4s could go in the original manufacturers speaker holes)

The rear parcel shelf is a replacement made out of hard plywood that's nearly an inch thick!!

the bass needs to be in the boot, because you can then "corner load" it, which is where you get the speaker to fire into a metal corner (ie rear diagonal facing) and move it closer and further from the corner until it is in control and not too boomy. The air they move is huge in volume, and they need to be buffered by a cushion of their own air to sound right.

Rear speakers are sometimes better to be just mids and medium bass in the rear. It's hard to get rear sound correct, as you'll hear the rear left speaker AND rear right speaker too easily. Once, long ago, I had rear speakers either side of the shelf and put 4inch high "walls" up (mdf covered with cloth to match the shelf) to force the sounds straight up and keep them discenrably seperate. worked well in my Nova, and badly in my Astra.

Dont spend money on rear speakers, when you might not need to yet.

Get the bass sorted, fitted safely and the fronts firmyl sealed in their pods, and then spend a week with it

And get some good tracks to test stereo separation and spacialisation.
