    Timing Belt

It's all done!!! £125 on parts... and free labour (my dad). 4 and a half hours later and it's all finished and drives out of the garage.

My uncle owns a garage so we took it down there.. Wacked it on the ramp and started to get to work on it. Off comes the front drivers wheel... the inner wing linings, air filter, one engine mount and a few other bits and pieces just so we can get into the damm area to work in. We had made some special service tools which cost £50 ex vat to buy... but a week or 2 ago we visited the renault dealers and measured them all up with the digital verniers. My dad made them at work and they done the job superbly!! Locked the cams with the tool we made and locked the bottom cam with the pin that my dad also made. Changed the timing belt, idler, tensioner and alternator belt. All sorted now...

A saving of £220 ish. (Renault wanted £344 to do the job, 4 hours labour and parts).

So if we can do the timing belt in 4 and a half hours.... Renault are ripping people off by quoting 4 hours. If we were to do the job again, we reckon we could do it in 2 hours flat!

Next on the list......... front wheel bearing. It's started singing a bit... £22.50 from europarts i believe.

    all sorted mate....

wheel bearing... another job for my dad... i guess he's got all the tools.

We need to do the timing belt on our Astra now. V reg. 1999. 1.4 16v Astra. how much are the kits? As i guess its best to change the idler and tensioner each time ya change the belts on cars.... It's done about 42k miles... and im sure 40k is the time it should have been changed?
