New brakes gone on the Vectra

Just had new brakes (pads and discs) put on my Vectra. I had her serviced not so long ago at Kwik Fit (Yes I know) but given I needed it done quickly and didn't have the time to wait for an independant to do the job, I used them.

Car passed it's MOT, had the aircon regassed and had them do the half service at the same time seeing as it had been fully serviced last year when I bought the car.

Anyway when I was settling up my bill they told me that front discs and pads were really badly worn and needed replacing there and then, I asked them how much and after being given some waffle they quoted me £201 !!

How can they get it to that much ? I mean seriously, after arguing my point that 1) they use local suppliers for the parts 2) It would be an hours job maximum, maybe an hour and a half if they had a break in the middle 3) Where they adding commission to do the work ?

I didn't actually get a cost of what they would be charging me for labout but I worked it out to be £40 an hour.

Told them to put my wheels back on my car as I knew I could get the job done cheaper, I then got more waffle about how their parts come with a warranty and so does the work. I added that so they might do but for that money I'd expect to have high grade parts fitted, not the cheap rubbish they were trying to palm me off with.

Anyway got the car home, phoned around some mates and spoke to one who said he knew someone that could do the job for much less than, £90 he charged me, parts supplied and fitted and it only took him an hour to do it

Car stops really well now, it's a weird feeling having brakes as sharp as they are now. Just have to touch the pedal. As for Kwik Fit, I'm not going there again.

Reminds me to look at getting some new pads, will probably fit them myself, seeing as me and a friend did my timing belt for £25 as opposed to £200

It's good to have people who can help you out like that

I can see discs and pads being nearly that much, but £40 an hour labour is *really* cheap these days.

The astra had new front pads (only) as well as cleaning rear drums and it came to £120 at an independant vx.

well, without being too danerously close to libel....

they might not fit the ultimate quality components....hence the massive profts that they make!
