    Somone who knows engines?

The timing belt snapped on my wife's Hyundai. 140K+ miles.

It's an interference engine (of course) and I put a new belt on (It was idleing when it happened), with no joy (or compression), so I assumend bent valves. I pulled the head off, expecting carnage, but it doesn't look that bad. All the intake valves appear to be sealing well. I was hoping somone could take a look at this picture for me. I'm sorry it's so crappy, but it looks to me like none of the valves are sealing, and there was some piston contact. I think I need four new exhaust valves, but at $20 each I'd like confirmation before I start spending money. I'm really just surprised there isn't as much damage as I was expecting.

    It's big: http://www.sheol.org.uk/extras/exhaust.jpg

    Thanks..

There's no obvious sign of any impact, but it's hard to tell. Having looked at it again, there's one valve which has a definite angle more than the others. They definitely need to be replaced.

yep the one in the middle and the one at the bottom are bent, can't be sure about the top one think it is, looks like it had water in there so the gasket was on the way out.

get some diesel and pour it down the valve shaft while the springs are on, you will soon see if the ones that look ok are really ok.

you can usually shift the seals up with a screwdriver as your going to have to replace them anyway with the head gasket kit.

You should take the valves out to check them, clean all the crap off and put new seals on. If your putting new valves in you should probably get new guides and seats but Ive never had bent valves :p

I would probably just look for a used head or whole engine.. costs the same.

    Re: Somone who knows engines?

    Finally got it running again!

Four new exhaust valves, fitted with a lot of brute force because the airplane valve spring compressor from work wouldn't work on such tiny valves.

New seals, guides were checked straight, and all reassembled in about the right place. I just drove it around a bit to charge the battery, but forgot to tighten the cable to the terminal, so it didn't charge. That or the battery is kaput. I'll try again tomorrow.

    Total cost:

    4 Valves: $57
    Seals: $4
    Gaskets: $64
    New timing belt: $27

    Total cost of repair: $152

I'm rather pleased. Of course, now we need insurance and registration, and the tank's empty....
