Where do you guys learn your stuff?

    Good evening everyone.

I am obviously interested in cars, else i wouldnt be here....but like most people interested in cars i dont know anything about the mechanics of them.

Cleary from the posts that go on here you guys do!

I want to become less ignorant as to what goes on under the bonnet, and more knowledgable about how things like turbos/super-charges etc actually work.

Where did you guys learn your stuff?
    and....
Can you recommend me some where to learn?

    Thanks very much
    Will

the how stuff works site is a good place to start (google).

If you wanna know how a turbo works - google for 'how turbos work' ... how I learnt most of it, also chatting to friends, a few of my friends dads are into mechanics and they've taught there sons, my friends how it works

I didnt have a clue about engines until I bought a car... then ya need to get involved!

The engine bay im pretty happy about what each bit does.... and i even had some of the interior trim off inside the car the other day....

I was pleased as I took a trip to the scrap yard and repaired the seatbelt height adjuster on my car.. Looks better now Only cost £2.

Get involved and you WILL learn stuff!

Always had an interest in mechanical/electrical things - as a couple of videos and pushbike could testify.
Left school at sixteen - got a 'moped' RD50 which also coincided with getting a job as an airframe/engine apprentice.
Modified RD50 LOADS of times - rebuilt engine, bodywork, ported barrels etc etc.... then got into cars - couldnt afford to pay someone, so taught myself.
Just progressed from then onwards really - still learning loads though - but my overall understanding of what works and what wont has increased a lot latley - probably due to the projects im into.

My dads always done his own work on the cars we've owned so helping him has given me huge amounts of useless info.

Got my first car aged 17, dad opened the bonnet and said "that's your engine". My reply was "what does it do?"

3 years later I was a fully qualified Auto electrician, 2 years after that qualified mechanic/MOT tester.

General Curiosity is a good thing - How does it work and why does it do that?

NEVER be afraid to ask something, no matter how simple.

Having a best mate Doll, who's been in the car business one way or another for years. He's helped me mod the car which in turn has taught me a lot about the oily bits.

Oh and the RSC club as well.
