I couldn't get my MX5 up the small hill to my house, it just slid side to side even at low revs.

rwd in snow, contrary to the "anti scrabble wagon, hate fwd" brigade, is crap in snow, period.

OK, equip it with a nice LSD, good snow tyres and fill the boot with sand and you MIGHT catch a Ford Ka... but not likely.

Re: How NOT to drive RWD in the now

Snow is the perfect time to learn RWD. Everything that usually happens in a horrific sideways incident actually happens at about 2mph in snow giving you half an hour to work things out and correct

Find a car park, get learning.

RWD in the snow is fine - as long as you remember the car will go sideways as soon as the camber of the road changes one way or another - you could quite happily be driving down a main road at 5mph, totally sideways to the bemusement of other road users, as I was last year due to bad road camber. If in doubt put half a ton of sand in the back

There's no doubting FWD's deal with it better though - nice heavy engine over the front wheels (as proven here)

Been a little dissapointed with the GT-R in the snow this year - it actually has lots and lots of grip, and can gain speed far more easily than it can shed speed which is alot less fun than the 200 was (struggled to reach 5mph and spent most of the time sideways)

snow handling in a tail dragger won't teach you anything for when you loose traction in RWD

I had a great fun in the BMW which runs the nastiest tyres in the world.

I know what it's like, I've had it on ice before, I just didn't fancy covering the 18 year old bodywork in piles of muddy snow-slush

    I've got me a '97 106 1.1!

It seems stable enough in the snow, but we've not had much up here tbh, just mostly slushy and a bit white roads.

Apparently it's worse today though, if I post again in the evening, the Pug has done well!

if you had sloppy, soft suspension, it would break much better.. but your car prolly doesn't budge an inch on the springs at 20mph on snow. Try reducing the front tyres by a lot of pressure, so when you break the tyre walls squidge, that little bit of movement might be enough to start the body weight moving forward a little.. but ONLY if you can get them pumped back up easily on the non snowy roads.

One of the related headlines on that BBC page at the moment is.... 'Emergency appeal' for salt.

Are they seriously thinking we've all gotta go out with our condiments and do our bit?

Re: How NOT to drive RWD in the now

i remember the snow last year, had to take the traction off to get up a hill where everyone was waiting at the bottom and going one at a time incase they didnt make it.

OMG what fun !!!!! it had a turn halfway up, it was a perma powerslide with heart in mouth at the prospect of something coming down the hill when i had to take the left hand bend halfway up and kick the back end the other way doing about 30 up a 1/5

i wish i had the LSD and better tyres and i could have flown up the bugger

not had chance to get out in the 328 yet this year

Re: How NOT to drive RWD in the now

tbh with the idiots i have seen this week i dont know if i want to get it out this weekend :/

watched some nob who lives a few doors down come belting down our street today, packed snow.. he just skidded toward the wall at the end of the road, mounted the kerb and managed to stop about 10 inch off the wall

so many cars have been wrapped !

mind you nearly wrapped the van in northampton doing all of 5mph today, hence turning round and going home.

and thats not including the little chav bastards up a hill rolling huge snowballs into the road whenever a car came past, so glad they didnt do it to me or i would have been up for GBH

I was woken this morning by the woman up the road with a battered up automatic Merc. She was flat out on the gas pedal wheel spinning up the road at about half a mile an hour.
