How NOT to drive RWD in the now

Courtesy of BBC news, I'd like to introduce the "how to not pull away in snow in a rwd vehicle" compilation.

First a Merc, who is steering before they're moving, and who IS being told by a kind lady's voice ot straighten the wheel, but they ignore her.

Second a BMW 3 series, probably holding up a row of frw cars who are uncertain why BMW's often get in the way when it's snowy.

And third, the Transit drive who believes LOUD is best, when it comes to throttle control

Plenty of that sort of driving down my (ungritted) street this morning. I live by a small roundabout and watching people try and drive around it at speed and skid into it kept me amused for a good while.

I don't even drive, but i had to admit i was cracking up at some people by the tube station, who where un-able to move from stationary up hill.

Muppet was trying to do it in first gear, when he didn't get tracktion he accelerated harder.

Re: How NOT to drive RWD in the now

Last year, I made my way into work after the christmas break in the snow on roads that hadn't been treated.

When I came to a right turn into a cut-across B road, there was a long trail of cars waiting to come out of the junction the other way having trouble moving off. Having come to a stop, I selected 2nd gear to move of, sniggered at the 2WD mortals trying to get out of the junction and calmly managed to spin my car 180 at all of 3mph.

Seems they changed the video since when you first posted it, just a couple of FWD cars going nowhere, and lots of pictures of snowy landscapes. So here's one from youtube http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=VgccPa...eature=related
I don't mean to sound cold, or cruel, or vicious, but I am so that's the way it comes out.

me too... just been out for the crack. Front tyres down to 20 psi, left the rear ones at 38psi (my economy pressure) and it was a great trip

I've not sussed my car in the snow

Granted, it's shed loads better crawling around sensibly than something only driving two wheels but when you're playing on the carpark it tends to latch on to the smallest amount of grip and shoot you off in a random direction.

I like FWD, big heavy engine over the front axle, and really deep tread rain speciality tyres

    Snow is lovely

Got a fabulous wedge of front-end drift this morning corrected by a generous helping of handbrake and minor throttle tweaking ..... all at 5mph on a local roundandroundandroundabout.

I've got the Celica sussed. It understeers-alot!

2nd that, I've had a fab time in a FWD corning with plenty O handbrake. U turn and parks are equally made quickly and effortlessly with out the need for the effort of 3pt turn.

Must be 10 years since I had this much fun in snow. Ahh well, till the next time.

Gotta agree. I love driving in the snow. My Accord is nicely controllable round corners with gentle handbrake/brake/throttle. My only issue is the other drivers, but on sunday and monday night there was no one around. Needless to say a couple of us decided to make use of the lovely fresh snow in the huge Tesco carpark. It does help you learn about car control

Eagle F1 + MX5 + Snow + Turbo = crazy wheelspins at 2mph (in 2nd gear too...3rd meant I had to try and slip the clutch ALOT...which is bad for a twin plate 4-puck clutch). Really glad I had the mondeo this time round

Howard , hand your testes back to the gene pool , you clearly have absolutely no use for them at all.

snow handling in a tail dragger won't teach you anything for when you loose traction in RWD

I had a great fun in the BMW which runs the nastiest tyres in the world.

I found myself drifting sideways at 2mph yesterday in the RX8

I'd love to take my car to a track and learn to drive it properly, but in snow, traffic and narrow streets I'm not taking any risks!

Re: How NOT to drive RWD in the now

I think I did ok up my little road cos the local lads maming a snowman cheered when i came round the little 90 left sideways, and sprayed them with snow, and then drifted to a stop on my drive, gently sideways and parallel with the fence

I love snow,,,, but I WISH I had a Nova 1.2 or a 106 1.1i in this weather, cos there are no greater cars in snow.
