    Focus ST170 a good buy?

I was thinking of buying this or similar car does anyone know if they are any good? Any smilar alternatives? I need a good handling car with realtivley decent performance (doesn't have to be a rocket ship just a bit of shove in it for overtaking) for lots of a-b road travelling rather than motorway cruising. I'm i better of with 2.0 newer focus? Oh yeah i don't do diesel so no diesel's or unrealible Alfa's! Budget 5-6k

    Thanks for suggestions

Leon Cupra or Octavia VRS would be a much better choice imho, very decent moderately quick cars with good build quality. 5-6k should get you a very tidy examples of either.

Insurance on the 170's is also crazy compared to a normal 2.0l Focus.

How big a car are you after?

Both chip well too - and i'd prefer either to the '170 which tbh is a bit 'meh'. Leon has a massive boot by comparison too. Stock their 180bhp and chip to 210-240.

Mazda3 shares the Focus platform (so handles well) is Japanese (so is reliable) and the 2.0 Sport version is insurance group 8 and has 150bhp... all within your budget for a 2005/2006 model with <60k miles.

Take Peugeot 306 GTI 6 for a spin and then take a Focus ST170 for a spin afterwards.
I promise you'll not look at the Focus again

Re: Focus ST170 a good buy?

Thanks for suggestions some good cars there. How does Mazda RX8 compare they look good are they expensive to keep? I'm not bothered by size of car just as long as it drives well. I'd consider a new mondeo if they were in budget.

RX8 are fab cars, just make sure you get one with a full up to date service history, rotary engines really don't appreciate not being maintained. Some peeps believe you have to leave them to run abit before use and same after but not sure how true that it.

yes of course they are, a civic SiR is faster as long as its not in a strait line and they lack the rx7/nsx/supra "aura". undoubtedly a good car but how do you get from a focus to an rx8, seems you don't really know what your after

I just noticed they some were around my budget but it probably too complicated a car for me to own. I am open to any cars as long as solidly built relatively fast and drives well.

Re: Focus ST170 a good buy?

around your budget you could get a mint condition FTO with money to spare, they are horribly cheap for what you get, but just over what i want to pay for insurance. have a look

we really could do with knowing how many seats you need etc though, otherwise we can just go through an a-z or sexy Japanese cars

Thanks ok to narrow it a bit no convertibles nothing too old maybe 5-6 years tops. FTO although nice is probably too specialised if it goes wrong parts could be expensive and difficult to get hold of. I live in rural mid wales (no motorways here) hence why I want that's good to drive. I'd probably pefer a Q car rather than anything too brash and something group 16 insurance or under, hope this is more helpful.

Re: Focus ST170 a good buy?

I am sorry, this may stretch your budget a bit, but 2nd hand an option?

I am absolute fans of the Subaru STI and the Mitsubishi Evolution. Although I would recommend the Evo 8 or 9, and the Subaru 2006 or 2007 version. I personally do not like the new designs on both cars. The evo's redesign looks too futuristic and i think it's lost it's mean look. And the Subaru used to have this really SEXY looking grill, but nope apparently for better aurodynamics they turned it into a lady bug.

Get them if you have the money. I'm sure others would support my recommendations? They are great cars!!!
