    Brakes

Just picked up my BMW (2nd hand) from a main dealer two weeks ago. Its having some stuff done under warranty, but I asked them to check the brakes.

It turns out the front needs new discs and pads because they are rusted up a bit. Now normally brakes are not covered under warranty, but the fact that they are rusty AND they should have checked the car over beforehand shouldn't that give me some leverage? Sold a car with defective brakes? If it were 2-3 months down the line, fine I'd bite it but two weeks? I only noticed when I took the car out in a dry day that it was grinding a bit.

    Thoughts?

They should be checked as part of the PDI. If they are as bad as you say then they should be replaced free of charge.

I wouldn't let them get away with charging, kick up a stink if they refuse, threaten contacting BMW direct, they won't like that!

The only thing I would say that if it is just rust then it could be rust from where it was standing and it will wear off with driving, it isn't that unusual.

Yeah, I'd push to have them done for nowt, if its a wee bit of rust its not really an issue, happens to most cars if they've been standing for a while and a good italian tune up should clear them up. Perhaps the dealer was chancing their arm hoping they'd get some money out of you already

    Re: Brakes

Unusual for the pads to need a change just because of a bit of surface rust. Sometimes they get a bit stuck in the calipers and that causes uneven wear. Good few miles of driving normally clears them rather rapidly at any rate.

    Re: Brakes

If that was so would they really recommend changing them?

Going up a little later and bringing D.A.D support.

Did they recommend it assuming you'd be paying for it? If so, then yeah. Also, if they're saying the discs want doing, you change the pads with them.

    Re: Brakes

Well just got back, politely put my case across, saying well if they were that low it should have sown up on the inspection check before it was sold. The guy said, its not for me to say, so I said, I know and appreciate that, but because I only picked it up 2 weeks ago its a bit much. So he went off chatted to his service manager.

They were going to take it up with sales. So didn't pay for brakes, and they didn't charge for the loan car as well. Result. Thats nice professional service for you. If only everyone was like that.

If it had been a couple of months then fair enough, I would have coughed up.
