8.4mpg is not whats bothering me, its the -20 outside temperature - and car thermos always lean to the positive as it is!
Its good choice of car tho - the only thing of course is no one really knows what the long term running costs are like in terms of hardware failure - I suppose at least with the current circumstances you'd get plenty of goodwill from Toyota if anything significant did fail

Assuming no more icky recalls, I don't really expect anything major within the time I own the car - I don't plan on clocking enough miles to really test the battery warranty for example (which is good, since it costs thousands for a new set). But we shall see. And since I have a Honda currently, I'm used to things like high servicing costs.
Still, I think it was the right choice. I'm relatively inexperienced with automatic transmission, but unlike the others I've tried, this one seems pretty fluid
And as long as I get more than 40MPG actual, I'm doing better (and saving money) compared to the Jazz.
Oh, and I don't want to turn my nose up at 15 quid road tax.
Isn't the transmission some kind of CVT type thing?
(Googles....)
Yup - sorta:

On the head vs heart side of things wouldn't a plain old small-ish diesel get similar MPG without having people assume you were a tree hugging bearded hippy type:
?
Wife didn't want a downgrade. I could move sideways into a diesel (dunno, something like a Fabia would be pretty comparable to a Jazz), but in the end, this means a nice big car without big car guilt. Cake, eating it, etc.
Oh, and Quiche is manly food!
I'd hope for way more than 40, my 2.0d is returning 44.8mpg from a happy right foot and 177bhp...

Bah - I understand the logical argument but I've been stuck behind a few round here recently screaming "it's a 40 not a 30, put your foot down you beardy wazzock!". Though to be fair I've probably said similar about Jazz drivers too... In fact Jazz --> Prius is probably an upgrade (image wise, it's definitely an upgrade size wise). I think I'd sooner be assumed to be a tree hugger than an old woman with a blue rinse perm. Though on that note does anyone here have an older female relative in the Winnersh area that drives a blue Vauxhall Tigra? Saw her razzing it past Sainsbury's a while ago and had to do a double take - assumed it was a boy / girl racer but no - old lady with a proper big afro style grey perm razzing it and looking very annoyed at an old geezer driving an old Korean crap box (possibly a proton, I forget) that was holding her up...
You're a veggie right? Never heard anyone but veggies defend quiche! If you look down at your feet right now would you see geography teacher style thick socks in sandals at the end of your beige / purple / green corduroys?

The Toyota sales guy was pretty alarmed when I hit the pedal to the metal.
I wouldn't be buying it if it didn't have more zoom than the Jazz. I expect to still get an MPG around the 50 mark, even with my driving style. Although I'm one of those insufferable pricks who stays at 30 until the very moment of passing the national limit sign.
Nah, quiche loraine is a fryup in a pie - egg, bacon, etc! You're a veggie right? Never heard anyone but veggies defend quiche! If you look down at your feet right now would you see geography teacher style thick socks in sandals at the end of your beige / purple / green corduroys?
You have to see what it can do right?
As long as it doesn't take you 5 miles to get up to the speed limit I'm happy with that. It's the types that do 30 in a 40 yet still slow down to 25 for a speed camera (and stop dead at roundabouts where you can quite clearly see there's nothing coming for half a mile!) that really get on my nerves. I'm sure I'm coming across as an angry driver but I like to keep my average speed up - to drive smoothly (well, most of the time!) while still making good progress.
Exactly! That's what I said! Any heap can keep going in a straight line at a constant speed - the worry is over how a car the size of the Prius handles for acceleration given the under-sized engine - i.e. how good the Electric hybridness is.
Still not 100% confident about moving off in an auto, but generally speaking, the difference between the Prius and the other Hybrids I've driven is night & day.
There's nothing to it - take foot off brake and apply (heavily) to accelerator. No worrying about clutch bite points or anything - I find I generally pull away quicker in an auto for exactly that reason. Maybe I've just driven crap autos though - they all pulled off much cleaner with a slightly heavy foot than a mild prod.
Couldn't agree more. Blooming dangerous in the countryside too.
