A company would use a comparison site to increase custom given the number of users, confused.com, moneysupermarket etc.

I'm not saying go through a comparison site, far from it.

I'm saying use them to get the best deal, then pressure the brokers to get a better deal, if not then get the best deal via a cashback site. It allows you to compare over a hundred companies very quickly without having to re-enter data for quotes saving time and effort.

from £780 3PFT (which was via a broker as the other policies were over £1000) I got my policy down to £500 fully comp the following year with £30 cashback just by this method (1.9dci megane with no ncb originally)

    1) Top choice for a first car.
    2) Remember to get it serviced occaisonally
    3) Put a day aside for some intensive insurance shopping around.

I've got a 106 Rallye that's never really worked properly- my fault rather than the car's I suspect. But it does mean I've been hanging around on 106owners a fair bit.

    reliability
Hmm. Chances are that nothing major will go wrong with it, niggly things may well. The TU-series is a great engine that will manage well over 100,000 miles if not abused.

    performance
Enough for a new driver- 106s are very light so a little bit of power goes a long way.

    how it does with fuel
Very good- again they weigh sod all so you don't burn a lot of fuel getting them up to speed. As with any car, the way you drive makes a big difference. Read the road ahead! Have some traffic lights 100 yards up the road gone amber? Lift off immediately and just roll up to them. Ignore the prat 2 yards from your back bumper who thinks it's important to do 30 until you're 20 yards away. Can you see the traffic approaching from your right at a roundabout? Have a look as you approach. If it's clear, just slow down enough so that you're not squealing the tyres on the way round. Etc., etc.

Got it for 1k came with 1 years MOT and 1 years Tax, 45k miles and 1 elderly owner since new ( the guy was 68 when he got rid of it)

also, any tips for keeping it in good condition?
If it's a stereotypical Old Person's Car it'll have a big stack of MOTs and servicing bills (hopefully one for every year it was owned). Have a look through and make sure the cambelt's been done at least once- and if not, save up to get it done soonish. A 1.1 engine will probably only cost you 20 quid on ebay but it'd be ten times that to get a mechanic to fit it. Best avoided if you can help it.

And- take it easy! It takes a lot of practice to become a truly safe driver. I consider myself a smooth and safe driver now, but TBH it probably took until I got a job as a bus driver and started driving 7-9 hours a day to make me that way. Assuming you're a youngish person, in three years time when you fancy upgrading to something a bit sportier (I went with a Toyota MR2 when I was 22), 2-3 years no claims is worth a lot.

Re: Got my first car :D

Sounds like your first car is in a much better state than mine was.

Mine was a MK2 VW Golf. 1.3 engine, 4 speed box off a polo we think. These are the fond memories of my first car.

    1) It had an untraceable oil leak. We changed every seal we could think of.
    2) The drivers side indicator light was loose in the bumper, I fixed it back in using polly filler.
    3) When I hit a work colleagues car (I caught it with the wing of mine) it was revealed that most of my wing was actually just filler.
    4) When in for its MOT the testers hammer went straight through the underside of the car where it had been filled instead of welded.
    5) After owning it for three months, the exhaust dropped off.
    6) I took a roundabout too fast in the wet, lost the back end at 3am in the morning and ended up on the wrong side of the road.
    7) Some chavs tried stealing it under my nose.
    8) I reversed into a wall, and the wall fell down.
    9) I drove round in it for two months with no oil in the engine.
    10) I almost reversed it off a cliff !!
    11) Someone drove into it in a car park and left me with a nasty dent on the drivers side rear quater panel.
    12) Someone rear ended it at traffic lights when they were lighting a fag.

But the worst thing I ever did to that car was leave the hand break off when parked outside my house, and it rolled backwards down the road and parked itself quite neatly on my neighbors drive !!

    That car was indestructable !!

From what I understand about roundabouts, they only have 1 "side of the road".

I should have said I ended up facing the direction I'd come from. I was just glad there weren't any police out and about then.
