Try not to scratch it, if you do, keep the scratch clean otherwise it'll rust quickly.
    Keep it clean.
Don't do anything stupid in it.
Oh and... Don't go from 4th to 1st at speed like my girlfriend did (sounded like a squirrel went through the engine apparently )

Looks like a basic model, which is much better from the reliability front. Performance.. hehe.. um, it's a good first car. Fuel.. it's not a diesel, but for a petrol car it's okay around town, but very much depends on how much you're carrying and how hilly it is - also it's not at all efficient at higher speeds so if you want to save the pennies then stick to 60.

As for condition.. well I wouldn't worry about getting dings and scratches - they're a fact of life for most car uses and there's nothing you can do about other people opening doors into you. The key thing is to make sure when you get a chip or a scratch that it's not too deep - buy a cheap repair kit/touch up pen and use it immediately on any deeper scratches - it might not look perfect, but it's a lot better than allowing rust. Then you can always get it done professionally before selling (might not be worth doing though).

I guess you know the usual car stuff - check oil levels once in a while, especially before a big trip. Ditto tyre pressures. Think about filling up once you reach the 1/4 mark so the fuel pump stays nice and cool. Work out fuel consumption at each fill up so you can spot if there's a sudden change.

Re: Got my first car :D

That sounds pretty identical to the 106 I have now. I have a 1997 106 XL Independence 1.1.

As has been said, its pretty slow - but once you hit 60 it'll sit there no bother unless you hit a decent incline - mine is quite loud if I try and get to 70 so I just stick at 60 even on Dual Carrigeways. I get about 40/45mpg out of mine, which isn't too bad I don't think.

It doesn't accelerate particularly quickly as you can imagine, which makes overtaking quite difficult - if a vehicle is sitting at ~50mph on an A road then I won't overtake as I simply can't do it safely on any of the stretches of road I drive on - you'll easily manage to get past tractors etc though, no issues there.

Reliability - pretty good, I've had a few issues with my exhaust, but nothing major has gone wrong with it and it's 13 years old with almost 100k miles on the clock.

I tend to fill up at the 1/4 tank mark too, just so I've always got fuel in the car - didn't know about it helping with the fuel pump though! Is that so it is always guaranteed to be pumping fuel and not a bit of air if you go round a corner or something?

As a first car though, it'll do you fine!

It's more that pumps generate a small amount of heat from the way they work, and fuel pumps are often cooled by the fuel itself. The less fuel you have the less of a heat sink you have for the pump heat.

I don't think it's ever going to be a major problem, but if you're interested in putting the least amount of stress on components etc for their longevity then it's something to bear in mind.

I know all about them... and as you live in Watford I may have sold it as I was a Sales Man for Hortons of Watford back in 1998

Good on fuel... lovely gearbox and subtle suspension.. it does lean but it leans with style.

What is it? A Zest 1 or 2 or 3?

Not so sure about the gearbox 13 years later!

I like the ride in mine though, it seems pretty stiff - I like it!

Try a price comparison site, as you never know and they come up with good numbers for bargaining. Most companies now offer 10 month bonus accumulators which is well worth it in the first few years - elephant and direct line are places I always try regardless of comparison site results, but there is no 'best company' as it'll depend on your circumstances.

How many miles will you be doing?

There are ones that insure you for less depending on the miles you do, limited to not driving at rush hour, after 11pm etc and because you are driving at less risky times your insurance will be lower

failing that, look on MSE and try all the comparison sites/brokers

Try adding a parent as a 2nd driver (NOT as the first driver), it can help lower your policy even if they never drive it (to do it the other way round is fronting and illegal)

kalniel, direct line are worth trying as they dont use the comparison sites so wont appear

Why would a company use a comparison site? They get listed by the site, regardless of whether they push data to them or not. First google result for a comparison site returned one that included direct line in their comparison for example. But there's less room for haggling if you go through a comparison site.

Your going to get stung for your first year of insurance, my punto 55sx was £1300 third party fire and theft for the first year. Put your mum and dad on your insurance as named drivers and you should save some money. Mine have been on all my policies and that has always resulted in a saving If they have points though no point of bothering I wouldn't have thought.
