The upside to this is it did lower my premium adding them as named drivers.
Nothing wrong with it and it is very sound logic, I would have added my parents, sisters and girlfriend to my policy as secondary drivers if it wasn't for the fact I don't want my sisters driving my car and my parents/gf have claims/points and actually pushed it up

So how does that work for me on a 4 year course and living at home and commuting 50 miles round trip to university each day? (Cheaper than living in Newcastle though lol)

Insurance wise, I found the first year a broker was best, then swiftcover had an amazing offer on the following year, need to start looking for the next quote in a couple of months but it went from £780 tpft to £500 fc in a year.

DG, look at a diesel car, they are usually lower to insure (and tax, and better economy) and aren't seen as boy racer cars as much as a corsa is

I upped the Voluntary Excess to £500..the over all price dropped by £100

Indeed I should have learnt to drive when younger, but being young and not earning that much working part time I couldnt afford it

    Ahh well..better start saving.
Did you go with Quinn Direct? I'm 18 so it should end up being less than what I got (£1490) with an excess of 250 ( cant be changed)

Re: Destined to never have a car :(

I'm insured on a lot of policies, as I'm only "admin cost" on most policies to add me. (over 25 - I know *shock* , Female, 7/8 years NCB, my own policy etc etc)
Only for cars that I "might" need to drive though, like Guys' as we were gonna do a road trip, and means we can share the trip to the LAN.
Mums' car as dad puts the premium up and she wanted a second driver.
My OH's car as occasionally it's good to share the driving (although I'm not now as I'm not old enough to drive a N reg, £300 Golf GTi on his insurance)

Also, at 24 - you'll find that once you have that 1 year NCB it should drop like a stone, and will drop again when you're 25...

The same company that went into administration yesterday?

You might want to look into jumping ship, I don't know where this leaves you at the moment.

EDIT: Missed Dave87's post saying the same

I can't quite believe the prices your getting OP and I thought £1300 when I was 17 to insure my Punto on a provisional was bad! I wonder if going for an uncommon first car might help your premium out? I'm sure a lot of people opt for a corsa 1.0 litre for there first car?

Re: Destined to never have a car :(

Once I got the first year under my belt and gained a NCB for that, it dropped by alot.
After going past 21 it dropped futher, that and the past motors being 'reasonably' quick helped as at the time the current insurer took into account not just driving experience but the choice of car. So it helped that I could show a previous history of similar cars, rather than jumping straight from a 1.0 Ecobox into a 3 Litre VX with the power going to the rear.

Re: Destined to never have a car :(

There is one other car, which is the mothers (1.8i Vauxhaul Cav) but to be honest when/ if I get a car, I can see her getting rid of hers as it is kind of slowly dieing and it will cost more to fix it than the car is actually worth now.

I may well look into the Diesel option, did a bit of learning in a 1.4 Diesel Fiesta and really enjoyed driving it.

Now driving a 1.6 Petrol Focus

As for the un common car thing..I would love to..but it would have to be a car I like.

    I have looked at: -

Corsa, Fiesta and Clio realistically so far, all being about the same.

Funny though, about 4 or 5 months ago I looked at an older shaped 1.4 Golf and the insurance on that, fully comp was only about £1,500! Maybe start looking there again!

I meant with my comment the size of car, get something bigger then the traditional small car to begin with. If your not to image conscious a Mondeo, Megane, Laguna, Rover 45/ 400 etc may be worth looking into.

I must be doing something wrong even a 1.1 Peugot 106 from about 97 comes out at £2,500+ fully comp!

Re: Destined to never have a car :(

Hmm!! That's gotta be wrong, I was checking the same kinda car, I think mine came out around 1700ish average.

edit* Actually no mine was only 3rd party.

I don't think I can go full cover for the first year or two of insurance, too much of a killer.

Hmmm not always the case, I have always been fully comp, as it has only been a few (and I mean literally a few £'s cheaper) in one case Direct line wanted more if I only wanted TPFT cover!

There are all sorts of things that make a difference, though. Try, just for the purposes of working out what's going on, a different postcode. Then a different occupation .... and so on. It might show what the problem is.

The insurance cost is based on many things, as Saracen says. The main one is "how much will it cost us to repair a third party's Veyron when this guy ****s up?". People in 106's crash a LOT, it's a popular car for youngun's.
