I'd have said the main one is the potential cost of personal injury, which can be VERY large sums. But I agree with the point - it's about assessing risk and the biggest single factor in this situation is probably having just passed the test, so little or no driving experience.
Confused and moneysupermarket are good for comparing quotes. Unfortunately, i know how bad manchester is as i lived there for 3 years and you will be looking at high insurance premiums regardless of what you do.
As mentioned, adding women drivers who have no claims as named drivers seems to be the best legitimate way of bringing the quote down.
I think I may well be adding my mother to the policy then!

Skoda Fabia perhaps? especially the 1.9SDi - dog slow but ins. group 4 iirc?
Scoda Fabia is a good option, basically a VW but it doesn't have the same desirability factor so its cheaper to insure.

So a little cheaper for a car with a bigger engine, so maybe i should be looking at the more obscure.

Try the 1.9 mate. Because it is a Non-Turbo diesel it is rated differently to Petrol/Turbo Diesels (i.e. the 1.9 isn't going to be such an issue).
Trust me - friend of mine did it, halved the cost of the insurance compared with the 1.2/1.4. They've probably cottoned on to it, but it may still work.
Yeah dont look at engine sizes when looking at non turbo diesels as it doesnt really work in the same way. An SDI will be pretty slow but the insurance will be pretty cheap. Might be worth checking out the 1.2 12v fabia's also.
1.9 Fabia, Diesel, SDI comes out at £2,700 fully comp.

You tried a focus or mondeo on insurance? What about something like a volvo or rover? I'm thinking with the last suggestions they might be low on the crime hit list??
