    Car...

Right as some of you may know I recently passed my driving test.

Now I am looking for a car and have no idea what to get.

I did see a 2008 Fiesta 1.25 Zetec for £4,500 and the insurance, fully comp was £1,500..however the compulsory excess was £3000, or circa £4000 for insurance and compulsory £250 excess.

I spoke to Fin and Dave last night and inbetween been slagged off for apparently lack of man card, it was suggested by Fin to look for a Fiesta 1.4 Diesel which I did and the insurance came out with TPFT select at a little over £2,000 still with a high excess.

Now I am looking for a decent-ish to decent car that isn't going to cost me an arm and leg to get, run and insure.

I have been toying with the idea of finance, and so far, the best option I can find is to use the £3000 swappage scheme that Vauxhall have to get a car a fair chunk cheaper and then some how, find money for insurance.

So has anyone got any suggestions?

    Re: Car...

for a first car you really should look at an old banger eg a Fiat seicento with a little 0.9L engine. Group 1 insurance.

My first car was a 1.4 Fiesta.. Loads of garages about, loads of dealers and cheap insurance. Just a good all round car .

Can find them pretty cheap too.

I'll talk to you on MSN about it later

See, this is my problem..I dont want an old banger :s..I just dont like the idea of it.

Matty, even a 1.4 Fiesta will kill me on insurance I reckon but it is worth a look I guess.

Nobody wants an old banger.. It's just where you have to start unless you save up £3500 like I did.

This, I'm afraid. It's how everyone starts. My first car was a ten year old Rover 414 I picked up for £800, and even that cost me £1600 to insure. The newer the car, the more expensive it'll be to repair if you have an accident, and as a newly passed, young male driver the insurance company is likely to see that as a when, rather than an if...

p.s. Take you Pass Plus, it *should* make a difference to your insurance costs...

You did better than me, I didn't get any at all - but that was mainly down to being 30 before I took my driving test...

    Tough I'm afraid.

You could have something nicer, but you would pay through the roof for it, and it would be a waste of money.

Unfortunatly you are more likely to have some form of accident in your first year, so why do any damage to a nicer car?

    Driving/having a car is a priviledge, not a right.

    Re: Car...

The way I see it, although wrongly is...if its going to cost me a stupid amount to insure a car, whether it be an old banger or a new one, I might as well go for a new car and pay the high insurance on a decent car.

I am wanting to take my pass plus. And will do, but having to pay for other stuff this month has left me slightly skint.

    Re: Car...

General advice on lower car insurance premiums.
I also read recently about some companies who give discounts if new drivers agree not to drive at certain hours of the day (eg after 10pm etc).
I suppose that the idea is to help those that just want to start somewhere, and 'punish' those who want to be flash in cities at nighttime.
Will try to find this link, although cant find it right now.
I'm commenting on an internet forum. Your facts hold no sway over me.
