    wheel bearings

    my right front inner wheel bearing is knackered - are tehy standard for all cars or unusual parts? shall i just grab one from a scrappy or is it worth hunting out new?

    Best off with a new one, though they're car specific.. some are even front/rear/side specific as well!

    If you buy a second hand one you'll not know how much life is in it - for the cost get a new one, it shouldn't be too tricky to find.

    There are shops that specialise in bearings, if you can take the part number stamped on the old bearing into them they're often a load cheaper than buying it from a car dealer.

    Note, this is secondhand advice, never tried it myself although I will be soon as my bearings are tired too!

    I've done that Rave - but for a photocopier. Was about £20 it cost me, as opposed to £60 odd from Toshiba... and it lasted better than the genuine article too....

    don't think i'd ever buy a wheel bearing from a scrappy, for the sake of a few quid vs the hassle of replacing it a month later anyway as you picked an almost worn one! Now taking cars apart in scrappies is handy, get to see what goes where, and what to expect when you do your own
