Peugeot 306 Diesel (1995) starting problem

I have a 1995 Peugeot 306 diesel Mardi Gras. I have trouble getting it to start, but when it starts it runs very well and the engine sounds healthy. I have checked the glowplugs which look new. They all work ok when removed from the engine and checked with a 12 supply. The rail has 12v when it should do and I can hear the glowplugs relay clicking off, a few seconds after the warning light goes out. The battery is good and the starter turns the engine at the normal speed, but it takes a long time to start and is behaving like it has a glowplug problem. Does anyone have any ideas where I can look next?
    Many thanks. Stan.

If its really cold outside, try giving it two shots of heat - turn the ignition off and back on again after the glowplug light goes out the first time.

Failing that, get the compression checked.

Hi. Thanks for the reply. I've tried doing that (glowplugging twice) but doesn't make any difference. I did wonder about compression, but the engine seems okay, pulls well and ticks over fine, sounds healthy. Is it worth tightening the injectors? Or taking them out and replacing copper washers? Thanks again, Stan.
