As I said earlier in this thread I'm seriously considering going against all my old principles and buying a new Honda Vision- normally I'd be looking to buy secondhand and fix any niggles myself but I now realise that with the hours I work I actually have more money than time; and a brand new Honda with a 2 year warranty should Just Work for quite a while with only oil and filter changes that would take me an hour at a time tops.

And at the end of the day it would just be with a view to saving money on fuel- I'd probably save between 1 and 5 minutes commuting time per journey but that would generally be offset by having to put on/take off my riding gear and unlock/lock the bike. I reckon I'd save about £300 a year in fuel if I rode it every day.

So if I could insure it for under 100 notes the maths would just about stack up if I was keeping the bike for 4-5 years. But I've just been on MCN Compare and I can't get a quote for under £200, even TPO- add in tax and servicing costs and I'm barely saving anything in return for my £1800 outlay. I could get rid of one of my two cars, but I'd rather not.

I'm 32, had a bike licence 14 1/2 years, never had a fault claim on my insurance record, had a non-fault claim in my car a year ago. £200 seems a hell of a lot considering the IMO very slim likelihood of me causing an accident that damages someone else's property on a 110cc scooter. I do live in SE London though. And I suppose my lack of NCB through not having insured a bike is probably a big factor. Maybe I should go ahead anyway and hope for a reduction next year. Though if I can't get TPFT for a reasonable price I'm going to have to buy a decent lock and find a way of using my old T-Mobile Pulse as a tracker......

Re: To motorbike or not to motorbike?

I thought about giving bikes a go about 18 months or so ago but never actually got round to doing so, after reading this thread I have made up my mind to go get my CBT done and get a taste of it all.

Work is a 15-20 minute drive away and my current car is not the most economical of machines to put it lightly. The potential money savings are quite attractive.

Can anyone recommend a training place near birmingham/dudley?

Congratz, just remember its only valid for 2 years unless you do a full test, as its easy enough to forget lol.
