    Moral Dilemma

My uncle is staying at ours for three days- and he's rolled up in his Jag XKR. It's an 09 one, I guess one of the last of the 4.2s.

I have third party 'driving other cars with the owner's permission' cover on my insurance

So the question is- should I even ask? The thing is, I turned up to his years ago in my newly purchased Mk1 MR2, and let him take it out for a spin- and he was bouncing it off the limiter in second within five minutes of setting off!

I'm inclined to ask for a quick nip down the Sidcup Bypass and back. But whadya reckon? The car's worth about 30 grand, and I have about 20 grand sitting about in the bank- and of course I have no intention at all of turning off the traction control, or testing its limits of adhesion. So it comes down to whether it's a bloody cheek or not .

The answer's always no if you don't ask.

Let me ask you this: When will such an opportunity present itself again?

Personally, if I wanted to test a Jag (or anything else) I'd go to a dealer for a test drive, not risk awkwardness with an Uncle.

    Re: Moral Dilemma

I had a go in a jag a while back, granted it was one of the old (The Saint) type XJS ones but it was still a very different drive..

If it were me I'd ask, what have you got to loose?

    I'd ask.

    Or possibly Atari.

if you don't ask make sure you put testicals on your xmas list

if it were me i would already be telling tales of it drifting with traction control off.

    Re: Moral Dilemma

How about you get yourself dressed up in a set of driving gloves and a fitted sports jacket for when he arrives? He might pick up on the hint.

Seriously, most people are pretty cool about letting someone 'have a go'. My response is always "Sure, but if you break it then you pay for it". Can't say fairer than that.

Anyone recomend a Jag dealer that would let a pikey like me have a spin in one of their cars?

The lack of action from rave in this thread leads me to believe he`s asked ans is currently looning around the country side in a jag or his uncle has beaten him like a red headed step child for asking....

Naturally, any dealer is likely to assess whether any potential customer is credible or not before letting them lose in an expensive car ..... but you might be surprised. Dealers are also well-advised not to judge by appearances.

For instance, I showed up at a Jag dealer in a well-used 10 year old Granada, worth about £1500, and said I was thinking of a Jag. I chatted to the sales guy for a while, and then we went for a test drive, but I told him I'd want the wife to try it before we made a decision. We made the arrangement for the second test that next weekend, and when we got there about 1PM, he tossed me the keys and said "We close at 4pm today, please be back by then". He didn't conclude that because I showed up in a cheap old car, wearing tatty jeans, an old t-shirt and trainers, that I wasn't serious. He was right not to assume that, though in the end, I bought a BMW M3. New.
