    Cheap "Superchips" err chip?

Just browsing the net as you do and I came across this:
    http://www.firstphoneshop.co.uk/mod-...ower-increase/

Brand new product imported from Japan - A low cost alternative to a Superchip / BBR Starchip for your car. Boost your engines power by up to 20+ BHP and increase your fuel economy for an amazing £4.95 Delivered ! A Mod Chip is available for all normally aspired cars (cars without turbos). Easy 5 minute DIY fitment.

This simple, yet effective unit will allow you to boost the power output of your cars engine, without sacrificing reliability or comfort. It consists of a small electronic device that is inserted between your cars air sensor and the ECU. This is also know as a 'piggy back' device as it is external to the main processing unit (the ECU). You will feel the gain instantly, no fooling around or expensive tuning necessary. This unit will work with all vehicles equipped with electronic fuel injection. 99% of cars manufactured after 1988 are equipped with electronic fuel injection.

Here is how it works : You have probably heard of performance eprom chips (Superchips, BBR Starchip etc). These chips consist of a stock computer program that has been altered to inject more fuel into the engine under acceleration. Timing curves are commonly also adjusted consequently. These chips can be found to be quite effective, but are also very expensive - costing normally from £200 up to £1500 ! they also require plenty of time, specialist tools and occassionally soldering to fit. Our 'piggy back' Mod Chip on the other hand will alter the fuel and timing curves in a very similar way to the eprom chip, but without even having to open the ECU. How does it do that ? By fooling your cars computer and letting it think that your cars engine is sucking in air at a different temperature. Your computer will respond and increase power !
The thing that made me blink was it's only £5 inc delivery!

Anyone fancy giving it a try?

.. arent these the same kinda things which are sold on ebay, which is basically a resistor which fools the car computery thing into thinking its getting lots of cold air, so adds more fuel to the mix? i cant see how it increases your MPG tho

edit: one for 99p inc on ebay...

Sadly its the latest boy racer craze, i know people fitting them to their 1.1 Saxos and the like and saying they are getting about 50bhp more due to air filter, "chip mod" and exhaust.

Oh how i laugh at them!

if it was only £5 and did what it says, do you really think your car manufacturer wouldn't instal it at the factory and give higher performance/economy figures to the public?

It tricks the AFM into thinking its cold all the time so it whacks more fuel in or something like that...

Quite frankly, yes. The only difference between many cars and the **i sportier versions is quite often just a differently programmed ECU.
I thought it might have been a very cheap clone of a Superchips chip.

    *runs away....very fast..and hides*

To run the risk of sounding like a big girls blouse....it makes your car overfuel.

The performance increase will be a fraction...and then your catalytic convertor, full of unbruned fuel, will burn itself out and you'll fail your emmission tests....OR CATCH FIRE!

And you'll get an engine management light on straight away...and then the car's ECU will use a different fuel map until you get to the garage and you'll be DOWN on power.

    *runs further away*

avoid pls ..ya know it makes sense
