Yeah, the insurance is high because (apparently) young drivers have a 50% chance of causing an accident in their first two years of driving, and the average claim value is £2k or something, so insurance costs £1k or more. I (or rather my parents)paid £700 to insure my first car at age 18, but that was a few years ago now and it was a Nissan Praerie, which although a big car, is mainly driven by old people. Nowadays, with 5 years NCB and at age 25, I can afford to insure most cars- I just can't afford to buy them.
Anyway, use elephant.com to generate yourself a few quotes. Once you've filled in your personal details you can just hit the back button each time you get a quote and put a different car in, and it doesn't take too long. Just don't put your phone number in otherwise they'll call you and try and push you into a sale.
Finally, if you want to save money on insurance you should be thinking about buying a car that isn't popular with young drivers. Corsas, Fiestas, Clios, Saxos and probably 106s are bad from that point of view. How about a Toyota Starlet? When was the last time you saw a boy racer driving one of those?

Good advice there Rave. Avoiding 'Boy Racer' cars will have a very beneficial effect on your premium. In fact, your quotes should be a major factor in your choice of car. Not the other way. (At least till you earn some NCB)
Are Micra's part of the boy racer scene?
1994 onwards, not them square things

Job to say, try a few quotes to compare with the likes of Clio's. Sorry to keep hammering on about quotes, but it is the only way to find out. It's a killer I know. But being your first car, it will make a HUGE difference.Originally Posted by Tupac
A Micra shouldn't be too bad, but you never know really. As I say, spend half an hour on Elephant to get a feel for what it costs to insure different cars. It's time well spent. Elephant have saved me a ton of money in the past TBH, they are frequently the cheapest around.

I don't think anyone can go wrong with their first car being a fiesta myself

1st Car......
Fiesta, Polo (Up to 94L), 106, Saxo, Micra, Punto, Corsa and Ka are all possibles. Don't forget the smaller Japanese manufacturers with mega zippy sub-1litre motors.
The crucial point is that 1litre or less is the only way to get reasonable insurance. As many others have pointed out insurance is the killer but there are enough group 1-4 cars out there to keep your insurance on the friendlier side of £1000 and still have something to be proud of.
