    Tyre deformation

    Hello folks,

Moved from a wee Astra to a Nissan Primera 2.0TD.

Well happy with the handling of the car compared to the Astra but since getting 3 x new tyres I have noticed the tyres bending rather a lot when cornering.

I have the standard GT Alloys (5 for £60!) so 15" - Can I get away with buying decent tyres for it or would I need to get bigger alloys and lower profile tyres?

To be honest - Price is the key factor as the PC is needing a few upgrades too.
If I can get away with getting decent hardwall tyres (recommendations muchios appreciated) then I'd take that option as it should be a good bit cheaper.

    Thanks,

    CF

Better tyres on 15" wheels would be fine, what tyres are they btw?

Yokohama are very good and have a stiffer sidewall than other tyres as they have 2x extra synthetic layers in the sidewalls that other tyres don't, tyre fitters love them

just increase the tyre pressures by 2 to 3 psi....

    it'll do wonders.

The 3 new ones are "Barum" but the worst tyre (rub marks until 1/2 way down the text) is a Pirelli.

Are Yokohama not meant to be REALLY soft and poop in the rain? Great in the dry but there's lots of rain here and a certain amount of economy is required... Yoko's are about the only ones that I know of tho... :s

I'll stop by the garage tomorrow for a bit though. Will the tyres wear too much in the middle with 2~3Psi more?

    Thank you both.

New yokos are supposed to be better in the wet and for wear, i've just put some avs sports on the front so i can let you know how they compare to the previous a539,a520 the a510

Will the tyres wear too much in the middle with 2~3Psi more?
they will wear alot faster driving on the sidewalls give it a go as Zak says, i always over-inflate my tyres a few psi otherwise i get bad wear on the outsides of the tread pattern

Isn't it naugty having different tyres on an axle? Thought you were supposed to have them in pairs. I don't think you'll pass an mot with those on.

    Ahh - Yup. Nice.

How much would a set of Yoko's cost roughly? Might go on a hunt for them.

And definately checking the rated PSi again tonight.

Oh - And it passed it's MOT 2 weeks ago... With the same tyres on it. All it needed was a brake pipe.

    Nope, doesnt matter.

I'd try increasing the PSI on your tyres... before you splash your cash and taking the tread is in good condition :-)

Soft Yokos will most likely make things far worse. The sidewalls will give even more and you'll get more roll-over. It's a similar problem to what I've been having (pix to follow tonight). I suggest buying a harder (less grippy) tyre from manufacturers such as Michelin or Continental.
Of course do as Zak suggests and you'll be sorted anyway.

Meanwhile remember the Primera is a top-heavy motor and putting high load into the tyres will introduce greater roll-over onto the sidewalls than a car with a lower centre of gravity might.

So you are saying i bought 4 brand new tyres for nothing?

Mind you, the ones on the car were quite worn, not uniformely either. And it was only 91 quid for 4 tyres including fitting/valves/disposal Gave me peace of mind and sorted the pull to the side

You're not allowed to mix radials and crossplies on the same axle. Since crossplies are pretty much impossible to buy nowadays it's a moot point really.

    Well - Update.
No longer driving on sidewalls. Just that few PSi sorted that out. Can still feel the odd wibble from the Pirelli but it's on it's last legs anyway so will be getting replaced soon.

Still thinking that I'll be getting decent tyres next time... Continental/Yoko/Other decent makes. But will cross that bridge hopefully over a year from now.

    Thanks for the tips.
