Dacia new cheapy hatch - pre order now from £5995

    http://www.autotrader.co.uk/articles...eapest-new-car

Ok.. no stereo... but it's got the cables waiting!

CO2 is frankly rubbish for a small light car but it IS value for money, no?

and NOT a total munter either

I imagine the ones that do sell with have the extra pack for £600 for leccy windows, CD player etc

anyone going for the pre order?

I'd rather take a Skoda citigo for only a grand more. IF you were forcing me to buy a new car, that is. 6 grand gets you a great pre-owned car.

yeah but £1000 is 16% more and a used car won't have the new car warranty.

the thing is you see.. people still buy new cars, because they're... new

It'll have a used car warranty instead, which can be nicer

But yes, appreciate some people like a new car. I'd love one, just like I'd love to travel first class one day *sniff*

Looks OK. Would want to drive one first though. List price isn't everything. Also how much are parts / servicing etc. If the service schedule is silly/expensive, it can cost a mint just to keep a vehicle's logbook full of dealership stamps.

Re: Dacia new cheapy hatch - pre order now from £5995

I'm not going to be buying one. I just bought a lovely 7 y/o Mondeo 3.0 V6 Ghia X for £1600. It was £22K+ new. Round town it does 22mpg or 28p per mile at current prices. So 10,000 miles of town driving will cost me just under £3000, which is roughly what I will be doing if I drive it to work for the next 3 years. In that time I doubt I'd need to spend even a grand on maintenance- it looks like it needs new front discs and pads, but I'll be annoyed if that costs me more than 200 quid, and even fully synth 5w30 Ford spec oil and a filter won't rinse me much more than 100 notes.

Meanwhile the Dacia will have eaten at least 1500 quid's worth of fuel and will be worth <£3k secondhand. And you'll have spent 3 years driving a Dacia rather than a car with full leather, climate, an epic sound system, cruise etc. etc.

I get the fact that it's great value as a new car. I just don't get the value of a new car when other muppets are prepared to buy new and eat a massive depreciation loss over the first 3-6 years!

In Britain we seem to have the cheapest secondhand cars in the world as far as I can see- whenever I go abroad I see people asking, say, 1500 Euros for a 12 year old Opel Vectra and shake my head in wonderment. At some point I guess the money tap in Britain will be turned off and used cars will shoot up in value. In the meantime though, I'm filling my boots. My two cars cost me a total of £2200- that's for an absolute top spec Mondeo, and a V-Spec Eunos Roadster. Granted, I'm paying half that again per year in tax and insurance, but every journey I make now is a pleasure in one way or another .

Epic sound system? Isn't that what the V6 is for?

Sadly the Ghia X has a massively OTT exhaust system. I'll try and get my hands on an ST220 one- apparently that should get the power up to ST220 levels too (the engine is identical) .

Re: Dacia new cheapy hatch - pre order now from £5995

I can definitely see the appeal of it, if you wanted to buy a new car and "just want a car". You can obviously get a lot more for your money if you buy 2nd hand (even nearly new) and I wonder how much these will depreciate - I imagine they'll mostly be sold to pensioners who will keep the car until either they or the car dies, so there may not be many on the 2nd hand market for quite a while. I have to say I like it in a unpretentious way - it isn't pretty but visually it works for me - there are definitely uglier cars out there (though to me it seems like most new cars in this bracket have too many lines and creases in them and that soon the entire front end will just be mahoosive headlights).

(Hi Rave - I did see you reply to my other post a while back, meant to reply but didn't get around to it... in fact I've been lurking for a while but not really seeing much that draws me into posting a response here - seems a lot quieter here than it used to in general)

Re: Dacia new cheapy hatch - pre order now from £5995

In a world where I can afford a new car at all I'd still want to spring for the Fiesta or maybe the current Corsa I think, but only because I know they drive well and are reliable, dependable, sensible and lots of other things ending in -ible, even though the Corsa's indicator self cancel is a massive pain if you live anywhere near more than one island...

Neither are £4.5k's worth more car to someone that see's a vehicle as a white good though and if it drove reasonably that 7 year warranty would make the Dacia a very tempting proposition ....

If I wasn't stuck with a bus pass, a copy of Autotrader and hopes and dreams of one day having even the meagrest of budgets for a second hand banger

I ended up with a stainless back box on my Alfa which pushes the exhaust note into a lovely deep rumble on tickover. I despair of the modern push to tiny three cylinder engines when I don't do enough miles for the mpg to really matter.
