I rang my insurer a couple of time (pre and post purchase) and put it on file that I was changing wheels. They were only interested if they were more expensive than the originals and non-OEM - and even then they didn't want to increase the premium.
I bought BMW wheels so it was fine either way but it was worth the 10 mins just to phone the insurers. As a motor underwriter many many years ago, if we didn't want to pay out .. almost any excuse was good enough! A 10 min phone call avoids any problems and it won't cost you apart from the phone call .. at least in my experience.
Insurance is generally not a problem. There's a list here of which insurers want to be notified and which don't care: https://www.abi.org.uk/Insurance-and...e/Winter-tyres
Smaller shouldn't be a problem at all, larger/wider might be, but I can't imagine many people going up a size for their winters.

Hi Zak, what kind of life did you see out of the quadraxers on the fronts? I'm probably going to need a new set on the leon inside a couple of months, but if they're only running to 13/14k I might just grab a cheap summer set, that I'll be through in time for winter anyway
So 2 months in; still impressed with these come rain or icey roads they have so far have done very well and in fact more then i thought they would.
Impressed
awesome life on them tbh
on a 150bhp Saab TiD with a 200hp chip on for half their life they were fine out to 18k
on a more mundane car with normal horses and a cautious driver they'd see 25k easily before getting to 3mm,
I've got some on my wifes 2.2 Civic now and she's done 6k and they look like they did new.

Bit of a thread revival here.
My fronts where getting low on tread, so they needed replacing but my rears were fine... until I got a puncture. Seems the sensible option now is to replace all 4 tires
Given that i have no spare wheel or space saver, my only options were to:
A. Use the hardening gel and limp to a garage for replacement and risk cracking an alloy, making the situation MUCH worse
B. Use a mobile fitting service that can just come to my home
I decided the sensible option was B, so after a bit of research i decided to go for some decent summer tyres that do well in the wet. I compared performance per price and ended up deciding on the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 (255/40-R18). i knew it wasn't going to be cheap but @ ~£115 per tyre, they are not too bad given the reviews. I Ordered some at the weekend from tyrefitdirect, but i got a call today saying they cant do it because their local fitting companies truck has a blown gearbox
I tried E-Tyre but they cant make it till Thursday. I have left the booking with them anyway but the worst part of this is its my week off and i wanted to do stuff!
As for winter tyres looking forward, i think i need to look at getting some different wheels, but they would still have to fit over the top of the brakes so im not sure how small i can go.
You could also try the mobile service from Event Tyres, the AA and Kwikfit to see if they have any earlier slots - the prices are all about the same and if not there's so much competition they should price match.
Let us know how you get on with the AS2s - they scored amazingly well in reviews a few years back and then just dropped out of contention for some reason, I don't know if people discovered performance when worn was not so good, or if everyone else upped their game to match.

Event tyres I think use the same company with the broken truck in my area, hard to remember I tried a lot of different ones yesterday. Quick fit were like £30 more for the same tires, I didn't think to see if they would price match! Do you just call them and straight up ask? I could probs limp my car to their depot if they have them in stock as its less than a mile away.
Wear was one thing which seems to lose them points in comparison to others, but in the past I have always managed to make tires last well, I don't know how I do it but I seem to get a lot of mileage out of them.
Kwik fit have a mobile service too. I've not tried, but yeah I'd just give them a ring and say x are doing it for this price, can you match it?
Winter tyres ordered from TyreLeader which appear to be the UK version of Reifendirekt and cheaper than Reifendirekt. Was going to go for Nokian WR A3 but the Nexen Winguard Sports were so much cheaper and the reviews as good that I had to go for them . Total cost for 4 tyres was £279.16 (235/40/R18) fitting will be £14/tyre at a local fitters.
I'm glad people are doing it now.
get the winter tyres now while they're cheap and we'll see what winter holds for us all
