IIRC, it was simply to replace the horse with something faster and easier to use..

Maybe people were getting smegged off with all the horse crap on the roads too

    yup.....fast!

We want to drive cos we dont want to walk there. It would take to long to cycel there. Its not even a lazyness thing.

Who works within walking distance of work?

in fact.....could any of us organise our lives around a weekly trip to a market place that we had to walk to? We use buses or trains or cars....and thats because its faster. Even to buy a bottle of milk that is no effort to carry, and therefore we dont need storage space, we often drive.

Its about speed. We want things now, and we want to get somewhere sooner rather than later. And when we ARE in no hurry, on our holidays, we drive somewhere else, to walk, or sail, or fish, or take photos....bu we have to get there first.

Does anyone know of ANYBODY who goes on a hiking holiday FROM THERE FRONT DOOR, walks for a week, maybe camps somewhere and then walks home?

    At all?

its about freedom, not speed. In the past most people never travelled more than 7 miles away from where they lived in all there life. Due to the fact you had to walk there and back. Transport other than shank's pony is liberating

and liberation and freedom only arrive BECAUSE OF SPEED.

If speed was irrelevant we would all walk everywhere and just get there slower.

But we dont..we only have a certain amount of time in out lives.....in our week...in our day. If we dont get a certain "thing" done in a certain time, we must not do it, or we must forsake something else for it.

We must have speed.....without the ability to travel faster than our own legs, we are stuck. Harder to find food, harder to hunt for food, ....harder to get water, and carry it to our cave.....we must do it quickly.....a horse perchance...or a dog and sled.....and with this new speed we get more done, we evolve.

Same today in today's society. You must move house in a certain time frame. Even if your furniture was left behind and all new was awaiting, you, you must move yourself.

You cant walk....it would take DAYS....you must be transported...and the quicker, the better....cos if it takes all day, you have wasted your time on this planet.

We have lost time from our existance.

that encapsulates the speed thing, perfectly. They had to walk...it took too long. It wasn't a lack of fitness. It wasn't a lack of adventure. It was time. If it got dark before you got there, you had to camp or return to home. But either way, time was ticking on.

The man on the horse was there, back again, made money, sold produce and returned.

    Speed....always speed.

You want to go somewhere, you look at the fastest route. SOMETIMES you look for the best, most exiting roads, but that's a rare thing. Most of your life is about getting things done. If speed wasn't important, we would all drive nice looking, good handling cars that did one other thing. Kept us dry and carried our family and belongings, in safety.

But thats not the case....you must get from A to B to see Aunty C, or to getto see Mr D to sell him object E.

And you must get home, preferably via a shop to get some food for dinner.

and you must get it done in time for bed, or you will be tired tomorrow. And you must do it all before tomorrow, because things are planned for tomorrow.

Speed....travelling from A to B faster than last time.

You know I love speed but not in the sense my life is rushing away.
Unfortunately getting there faster was the reason and having more time for self and family was the motivator. Unfortunately the more time we make the more we find to do or gets put upon us. I could more philisophic here but let's say I loath speed. Love miles per hour, hate speed.
They (inventor's, Benz, Daimler, Ford) sought speed for the right reason's but it was also the beginning of a big backfire, literaly and figuratively

I say get out that saddle and take time to smell the road apples
