Car suggestion (on a tight budget!)

    Hi guys
I'm looking to buy a car for the next year. I'll probably sell it when I go off to uni in a years time so ideally I'd want something that won't depreciate too much over a year so I won't lose much money.

    Things to consider:

Want it to be as nippy as possible. My friend had a 1.4 TDI Lupo which seemed pretty quick so if I can find something on a par that'd be nice

Cheap insurance - ideally something that isn't going to break the bank. I've been driving for 2 full years (got my full license) but don't have any no claims as I've always been a 2nd driver :|

Something that doesn't look like a pile of sh*t.

Last but not least - I'm gonna be upgrading the sound system (talking around £1000 worth of gear. Mstation headunit + CD changer, Alpine 6.5" component speakers, 2 x SWR-1240 subs and appropriate amps for speakers/subs). So the car has to be one that won't be an absolute b*stard to work on - or one that has tiny 4" speaker places.

Budget of a max around £1500.

    Let the suggestions begin!

sell ya sound system crap and put the money towards a decent car! ya can pick up early models of Megane Coupe's for around £2500-£3000.

if not... look at something like a Golf. VW always hold the price, which is a good thing to look for if ya planning on selling it in a few months time.

you probably want something golf-sized if your putting lots of music in, but then to be nippy it needs a larger engine, and that means more insurance. i might suggest a volvo 440 or 460 - you can get a late 2litre job for under a grand, and insurance is pretty cheap (considering the engine) cos its a volvo

Sounds good 5lab, I'll check them out.

No chance I'm not having my superb sound system in there. Music is what I live for and I don't accept anything other than the best!

Actually I've changed my mind about the Volvo sounding good - it's petrol right? A 2.0 litre petrol Volvo sounds like it'll be as cheap to run as a Rolls Royce.

I should add economic to that list. Ideally 40+ as my current crappy diesel escort is doing about 60.

I have a 2.4 V6 petrol and get about 35mog out it (when driving normally)

If you are worried about running costs get another diesel, maybe a clio or a corsa.

You dont say whether you are after all out performance or fuel economy?

For performance with cheap insurance I'll post my usual Rover 200 turbo suggestion for that price range, although picking up a better condition non turbo could be the wiser move.

I ran through an online check for me next year - 27, 10 years driving and 1 no claims year = £650 for a 200+bhp 150mph, 0-60 6.2 second car. Quite surprising and they arnt supposed to be that bad reliability wise.

Definately looking for a balance between performance and fuel economy. If I could get something that does between 10-12 seconds 0-60 and 40-50mpg I'd be happy. I've only got 2 years driving and no no-claims though :|

My Clio will hit 60 in 12 (keeps up with my mates 1.8 Fiat Brava in 1st and 2nd gears!) and returns 44mpg combined

See thread pimpage up there ^
