New Toyota Supra (mk V)

So based off the other thread, and the amount of interest it picked up I thought I'd start a new thread up to discuss the upcoming Supra.

If you're not aware, it carries several aspects from the previous Supras; front mounted 3.0l straight 6 turbo lump, rear drive. It's a collaborative project between Toyota and BMW, with Toyota basically raiding BMW's parts bin. The base chassis platform is shared with the BMW Z4, with the engine being a variant of the B58. Gearbox is automatic, but with flappy paddles. Suspension has two options, one of which is an adaptive system that runs 7mm lower than the standard kind. Wheels are 19" forged alloy for lighter weight and greater strength. The engine mounting is just behind the front axle, and it has a perfect 50/50 weight distribution. The chassis is stiffer than the Lexus LFA yet doesn't use any carbon or composite materials, and it has a lower centre of gravity than the flat 4 equipped GT86. Power is above 300bhp (current estimates are about 350ish), weight is approx 1500kg.

It's only been seen so far wearing it's Toyota styled camo wrap.



That said, someone spent a long, long time photoshopping it off. This is what we expect we'll see at the Detroit Motor show in Jan 2019.

First car I've ever seen that looks better in the dazzle wrap. Either that or those images were taken after its NCAP tests.

my greatest concern is the BMW link

I pray the Toyota girls and boys in R&D keep the wiring and circuitry utterly Toyota, and utilise their awesome ability at making things that don't easily break.. and avoid the BMW penchant for "ultimate driving (to the local dealer) machine" epiphet.

Because one day this car will be second hand.. one day it will be 7 and 8 years old and it will need to be reliable and not a BMW hell hole of badly designed stuff. And then it will be 15 years old and ... if we're honest.. you'd not buy an X5 and drive across an ice plateaux or a desert but you would buy a LandCruiser for that. There are very few BMW 5 or 7 series taxi's for a reason......but you cant move for Toyota's

Is BMW that bad now? For some reason I thought they were quite reliable - is Mercedes at least OK??

I'd not buy one if I had to pay for the repairs...not as a first car for a daily commute, not a long distance tourer.

We have an issue... JD Power won't opperate in the UK anymore because of the way their webswite and GDPR clash, so we have to use other formats for reliability testing, apart from your own knowledge

I tend to use Warranty company stats wher I can get them for the actual costs.....BMW tend not to be too amazing.

It seems that the interior switch gear etc is all BMW. Has the option for a heads up display as well. Very BMW.

New Supra is hideous.
Looks awful compared to the MkII and MkIII variants. If they re-did those with some modern bits, I'd snap one up in a heartbeat!

These things just look like the designer always wanted a Miata, or summat.

Several friends of mine are mechanics. I help them out sometimes, or simply get dragged into work when I pop by for a cup of tea.... Having seen how many BMWs they work on, how often something else on them breaks, how much of a [hideous swear words] they are to do anything on apart from maybe the clutch, and how much parts can cost...... Well, you couldn't pay me enough to own a BMW.
I'm not just talking the low end models, either.... If anything, it gets worse as you go up the price brackets.

So, there's been lots of leaks over the last week. The launch video got accidentally tweeted by Toyota Mexico, who quickly removed it - but not before a few people made copies.

The front end of this Mk. 5 is horrific, while the rear looks excellent. Don't think I'd want one though.
