Get a diesel 1.8 - great cars tbh.
    Cheap to fix too.

they've got a bit of a dull image, but are probably a great buy for that reason.

could you stretch to a focus? they must be coming down to around that money are they not?

You won't get a good Focus for anywhere near £1500 I'm afraid. £2.5k for a shabby one still.

What you WILL get is a Mondeo the same age as the Escorts you are looking at, but higher spec. They do a 1.6 but best off with a 1.8 or 2.0. Better built, nicer to drive and more reliable, yet no more expensive.

I used to have a 1995 M Plate 1.8 LX Escort, was a great car!

Cheap to run and easy to fix and get parts for! Plus the added advantage over a Focus being that you can still do stuff to it yourself EASILY like servicing etc.
If you're not living on the edge, you take up too much room

Everyone thinks that, this is why they are so cheap to buy now. In reality, there isn't an awful lot of difference.

I used to drive a 1.8 bog standard diesel escort. I can safely say I'd never go back to driving it again after having driven my new Colt 1.6!

That said it was cheap to run, cheap to insure and cheap to repair. It's cheap all round but utter cack.

Colt 1.6 units are beautiful things tbh, as it goes i'd say look at a mondeo, less likely to have been used as a boy racer tool, higher specced, similar fuel consumtption especially if your looking at 5 door escorts, parts are just as common plus if you get an ex company car then it may have 20 million miles on it but it will have been well looked after.

    I sure wouldn't pay £1500 for a Mk5 Escort....£500 maybe.
