4x4 = 4 wheels, 4 wheel drive
4x2 = 4 wheels, 2 wheel drive
So why bother calling it a 4X2? Or can you switch the drive between front and back?
It's a Toyota Hi-Lux I'm after btw....

Well it just sounds better. Marketing basically
All trucks are rated 4x*
As far as Hi-Luxes are concerned, they're either 4wd or 2wd. The 2wd drives the rear wheels I'm almost certain.
UNLESS they got free-hubs on the front wheels. They're popular on Japanese vehicles (my 1978 Daihatsu had them). These days they're likely to be automatic, but some of them are still manual. Basically what a freehub allows is for normal road driving, the front wheels are unlocked, so the front diffrential is not turning with the wheels, making the vehicle steer better and use less fuel. When the selector is put into 4wd, the hubs either lock up automatically, or you have to climb down and turn the wee dial on the hub to engage the half-shafts so you get drive to the front wheels as well.

If your not going to be off roading or doing heavy towing I would get a 2wd. Just wondered why you are after one?

Okayama, thanks for that guys. I bought a White 1990 Hi-Lux 2.2 Petrol, 4x4, single cab, with big alloy wheels! £680.
There is a seperate stick in the cab to switch ratio's, but I haven't messed with that yet!
Bit of noise coming from the transmission/axle, prolly dry! Will investigate that today.
Any advise/comments from previous owners would be welcome, as I don't yet have a manual
Reason for purchase: Coz it's big and sexy and I always wanted one Will also be useful for car booters and shifting crap around, plus it will be uber useful at work (School site manager) regularly have to take old furniture and IT equip to the dump, pick stuff up etc.
We have a lot of land and if I have to go retrieve outdoor play equip that has been carried off (not funny when it's a tractor tyre!) well, my old Astra couldn't cut the mustard on the soggy playing fields! Will save me a lot of walking/hassle
