I didn't learn to drive with a major company, a small local one. I found he was an excellent instructor. I've heard bad things about larger companies such as the AA and BSM... They just seem to all be young instructors
Anyway I passed first time (After about 40 hours of lessons? at a guess) with 5 minors.

Well took my very first lession last night and was pleased with the good start
Ended up going with the AA @ £216 for a 12 hour block to start because he had a ford focus, was very suprized that he had me driving within 10 minutes of us setting off I drove to a town not far from me and back in cheshire and it was all very good for me
He said my gear changing at very smooth and was very happy with the speed that I picked it all up (my max speed was 40) and have my next lession booked for the 22 ( was going to be the 15 but the wifes away and I have the kids)

Yes £18 a hour @ 12 hours = £216, was £20 a hour but got a discount for being local and block booking

I'm sure lessons were just £16/hour a year ago,
I better do it asap
a bit of advice for anyone learning or going to watch out for some driving schools that take you for a ride i went with three my third and last one said i should of been passed ages ago most small driving schools try and hold on to you for as long as poss just so they can keep getting money of you, ive finally passed now i just dont want anyone else to have the same thing happen to them
i went with AA when i started learning (as above, book 12 lessons and they knocked £2 per lesson off) and also went driving with my dad between lessons in the week however i moved down to london before i had chance to do some more lessons and try and do my test... now learnign to drive down here will be a bitch.
