He bought a crapper, or he was a n00b with a turbo car... The engine's near bullet proof so long as it's looked after and you don't turn the boost up too high....

Thanks for all the suggestions guys - forgot to say that I am 6ft 7in and 20 stone - kinda rules out the R5 GTT.

Neighbour over the road has one and seems to like it too!

Err, why would that rule you out of a GTT? Seat rails are easily adjusted. I'm 6'4 and fitted with ease.

1500 quid will buy you a R5 GT Turbo though. You won't have more fun with your pants on.
I take back my previous suggestion of a gti-16

Cheers for the info Lowe. So you reckon 1.5 g's will get me a nice, fairly standard example? Ideally I want to buy something as close to stock as possible, although I realise that is something of an impossibility. Living in North London means you want to do as much as possible to avoid looking like Ali G. AYE!

1500 quid SHOULD get you a decent example, but people are artificially inflating the value through selling hugely modded ones for silly bucks - well trying to anyway. There's always plenty for sale though. Don't buy the first one you see cos there's stacks about.

Most are only worth about 500 quid these days.

I think for sheer ease of use, maintenance, and lairy balls out fun, you can't go much wrong with a Peugeot 205 GTi. 1.6 or 1.9. Thjeir equally as fun, with the 1.9 having had it's balls dropped at an earlier age.

R5s are great, but too problematic for a cheapy fun hatch. My Grans Dogs, Cats, Goldfishs' Aunt could work on a 205. There's loads about so finding one in good nick shouldn't be too much of a problem. Get a slightly well used 1.9 and you'll be grinning until Jenna Jameson comes round asking to borrow some sugar.

CRX 1.6 VTEC-16v - The original version with the 150bhp not 136bhp motor. It may be a little small for ya but you've got to try it just in case Besides the 205 is pretty damn small and no doubt bloody uncomfortable at 6'7"!

I bet it was running silly amounts of boost.

I ran 18PSI every single day for 7 years and never had a problem. It's the fools who keep on adjusting the bleed valve just a bit more that give the R5 a bad name.

Nope, you hear about idiots who don't realise that as you up the boost you have to up the fueling as well.

Sad fact is, since the GTT is cheap and easy to afford you get n00bs buying em, tweaking the boost up to silly levels, then slagging the car off when the headgasket blows or worse.

he bought it brand new! and it was totally untampered,in the end i think the garage got sick of repairing it as they offered him nearly full new price against a 19 16v a year later. he never abused it,he drove it 'reasonably' sensibly.he was prolly just very unlucky but its tarnished my view of them
