    Recommend me a "fun" hatch

Thinking of buying meself an old hot hatch for some fun - take the sting out of driving a boring old vectra all week.

Only wanna spend a max of £1500.

PUG 205 and Golf Gti both appear in my mind instantly - are there any others I should consider?

Decent acceleration and good handling are essential - must bring a smile to the face upon departure!

Does it have to be a hatch? You could get a MK1 MR2 if not. Out of the cars listed I would have to get a 205 1.9, just for coolness value. I would have thought they'll appreciate in the future if you look after them.

If you want a hatch, you want a Clio 16v though you'll struggle to find an example for 1500 quid which doesn't need a fair amount of TLC.

1500 quid will buy you a R5 GT Turbo though. You won't have more fun with your pants on.

I'm tempted to get an R5 when I get back to Blighty - fed up of people driving into my car and then driving off without leaving their details.

Lowe - how ragged and what sort of money are decent examples?

You won't find a non ragged example. Saying that though, they're not a revvy car, but there's no limiter. Standard turbo runs out of puff at 5k, so there's no point in going above that.

To give you an example of cost, I picked up a GTT for 500 quid. This one in fact.

The engine had been rebuilt 4,000 miles ago so ran perfectly. The bodywork was far from perfect, and the interior was none existant since the last owner had a HUGE ICE install. Obviously none of that bothered me since I only wanted the engine.

But, 1500 quid will see a decent example. Standard cars go for a lot more since they're.. well, standard. Unfortunately people who drive them tend to over estimate their value, but since there's loads for sale you can always find a bargain.

if it doesn't have to be a hatch how about a jetta gti 16v,v cheap to buy, cheaper than a golf 8v to insure and they handle better than the golf and most have been driven by old fogies for all their lives
