gear stick gaters

what is it with gear stick gaters? they really strike me as the scrotum of cars.. the ugly bits that the designer kinda just shrugged and bodged together.. why can no-one get it right? i've seen some shiney alu gear gates instead of a gater.. looks far nicer..

I've never driven a car with a gate, but the old Sega Rally arcade machine had one and I always found it impossible to change gear.
