Metal Gear Acid - Looks Great and Improved From Japanese Release.

Just watched a 10 minute presentation from Metal Gear Acid's director, Shinta Nojiri, from Konami's San Francisco-held Gamer's Day event, and I have to say, it was very impressive. The game seems to look and feel every bit as impressive as the previous Metal Gear games, on the 'full sized' consoles, but they have, in a stroke of genius, removed the random run-and-gun gameplay and replaced it with a card based battle system, with you then the enemy taking turns.

Its great seeing turn-based games in the Metal Gear style setting of Army Bases and the like. Hundereds of cards; everything from a simple run card or a fire card, to super-powered Metal Gear lazer attacks that kill everything on the screen. Looks very impressive.

And Nojiri announced (hopefully the start of a trend) that the US (and therefore the UK) release will be improved upon over the Japanese release by adding 2-Player wireless battle mode.

I strongly suggest everyone who has or will have a PSP come March to keep an eye out for this. Looks to be right up there with Gran Turismo 4 Mobile, GTA: PSP, and the Final Fantasy VII movie and follow-up game, as a big system seller. Although the FF7 game isn't due out till late 2005 \ early 2006.

The presentation is on the IGN.com Insiders channel, and I assume the GameSpot members area as well. Can probably be dug up from somewhere thats free to access though.

..........Well, a stroke of genius eh...thats not what I would call it

just an opionion i guess, but this sounds like its going to totally ruin the metal gear series. The 'run and gun' bits were some of the best bits of the metal gear series, and they want to take them out?? madness

Apart from that, it will lose them loads of customers, ok the 'magic card' playing geeks will love the idea, but anyone else in sonys market (eg the chavs, mainstream mid 20's gamers) will probably hate the idea.

Then again as long as its just on the PSP thats not too big of an issue, but if the concept transfers to any new metal gear series gamers on other platforms then I and many others will be sorely dissapointed

Well, I suppose its not aimed at the likes of you chavs.

Its aimed at gamers who know the score. Having said that, we could all shut up until we've played it I suppose and see how it works, but personally the idea of some stratagy and tactics instead of the normal mindless Sony style run-and-gun games is welcome.

oi who you calling a chav

I'm personally not a fan of the PSP anyway, or any of the PSX consoles, was just pointing out that their main target market(chavs) would be unlikely to go for the idea of a 'magic card' type system

but yeah maybe your right, worth waiting to see. Though i have yet to see a succesful video game that incorporates card based combat...

Its not full-on Magic the Gathering style card based combat, with experiance points and the Sword of Zorgan beating the Armour of Crimson Doom and all that.

Its just cards to move, cards to fire, etc. Turn based. I think it will bring some much needed thought to the mindless Sony type of games.

I think the move to a turn based/card style is definately a 'love or hate' move & a bit Jap-centric. Admittedly I'm not too enamoured by the idea being a chav gung-ho shoot first think later sort of gamer, but I will be getting it no doubt just because it's a Metal Gear Game. I've always thought they were some of the most enjoyable console games around so i'll give it the benefit. Maybe I'll be enlightened

Never mind chavs, how about us gamers who enjoy playing metal gear solid and not some ridiculous rpg hybrid withturn based combat

Next you will be telling us the story is as bad and/or worse than sons of liberty

The story invovles a president, a crashed plane, terrorists and dolls that float around the plane releasing gas.

    So yes.

What was wrong with SOL or SUBSTANCE? imho the metal gear series have been some of the best games ever made. Quality stealth driven gameplay, featuring a film-like music score that fits each setting perfectly, and match that with smooth graphics and an immerisive story and you have the best FPS/Third person shooter on the console ever...Hideo Kojima
Also Snake Eater looks amazing! the camoflauge, survival ideas are superb already on Pre-Order
