I think you'll be lucky to find a decent Mk1 escort for a decent price. Most now seem to be going for a lot of money, as they make such ace rally cars that people seem to be inflating their value.

i personally love it when the 'maxpower' reader say they want to get into drifting. let me tell you now in no uncertain terms unless you can find somewhere other than a public car park to practice then your going to end up getting monged.

I learnt the hardway, I wasnt trying to drift or anything but for my first car had a E30 318 BMW. it wasnt very fast in a straight line but it was RWD, didnt think anything of it till I had the thing in the wet......... nothing prepares you for a RWD and the wet weather its like butter to a frying pan. Unless you are experienced in front wheel driving I would advise no one to enter the world of RWD without experience.

About 2 weeks into owning the car I drove round a tight bend sub 10mph in the wet, the backend stepped out and i cloated a road sign. one bent BMW which i managed to repair later and sold sharpish for a ford fiesta.

I have never had a problem with any other car doing what the BMW did in the wet (tyres were all good brands with tread if people think that was a factor) but going from a FWD car to a RWD car is a very different story, especially if you have only been driving for as shorter time as you have.

I'm not having an attack at you, but perhaps you need to understand the otherside of RWD/drifting which isnt as 'fun' as people make out.

Out of intrest why are you wanting a drifting car unless your entering competitons? you cant be seriously thinking about showing off to peeps on normal roads can you?

Cm_uk: Butuz is right. I red washed to whole image because I wanted the text to stand out. Who cares anyway?

Only found one mk1 escort on eBay. It is a mint condition one though in lovely white with some modifications already done including the nice steering rack change . There is also a rally version of the mk2 doing for £8000 but that was a bit extreme.

turbo: Firstly I'm not a max power reader and I'm not a chav boy racer who drives faster than my limits round blind bends in the rain... (not implying that you are/were, just an example of the many things I see people doing). I'm also not deluded in the fact because I can drive means I have road experiance, I have already been in a crash with one of my close friends and it was a sobering experiance (might I add that it was the other drivers fault). My interest in drifting stemed from Initial D (yes, I know it's sad) but no-less it's a great sport. I love cars and specifically import/asian cars. I want to start learning to drift because it's something that I regard as being very skilled and respectful.

Tbh I wasn't planning on drifting on public roads, it's just not worth the risk. I did however want to attend some open track days to get a feel in a safer environment. Just remember everyone has to start somewhere....

Fair comment mate like I say I wasnt intending on attacking you personally as I dont know your exact circumstances. Its just I see enough tits actually trying to drift on public roads which gives those intrested a bad reputation they dont deserve and as it appears to be the topic of the moment in chav power (read it at work to pass the time) its only making the situation for genuine drivers who are intrested like you are in doing it the legal way to be tarred with the same brush.

I was just highlighting the everyday realities of RWD and how the car will sometimes try to drift without you wanting to which could be very costly...

Erm - I went stright to 125bhp of RWD (without LSD) when I was 18 with no issues. The back's never stepped out without provocation or a diesel spill.

what you and i experienced are clearly different then. this is not to mean that everyone will have the same 'success' as yourself though.

I'm sure you would agree however that they can be harder to control in the wet if you become over zealous with the accelerator pedal.

All you get without a LSD is the inside wheel spinning up. Far less dangerous than with a LSD which spins both wheels up.

Lets all calm this down huh guys? No need for agression and personal attacks.

And lets face some facts. Drifting has been going for years over in the UK, and decades in japan. Now that drifting is getting media attention by the likes of fast car, banzai and max power, your bound to get people who think it will be a good idea to give it a go on the roads. People drive their cars dangerously beyond their limits every day whether front, rear or all wheel drive. There is nothing much that me, you, or pro drifters can do about people trying to imitate.

Drifting will become a recognised sport soon, you'll be watching drifting on ITV as well as touring cars on a weekend.

The reason FWD is considered less difficult to control is probably because the correction of understeer is more of a natural reaction than correcting oversteer.

The point of my post was supposed to be that my 'sucuess' is mainly due to being reserved with the right foot. I'm well aware I'm not instantly able to hold the back end stepping out.

It's down to walking before you can run. I never hopped in my car and floored it (took about a month probably ) But I know what you're saying. Some people hop in and assume it's boot it like FWD. Quite a few RWD cars have met their doom that way.

Again, nowt personal to anyone, just the way I see it.

True, but it's a lot more effort to loose traction on both in adverse conditions.

EXACTLY...you hit the nail on the head.this is what i am trying to tell you jimmy.you need to get to grips with ff cars before even thinking of getting a fr car let alone drifting it. for instance you would want to say to learn to tackle a Integra type R in order to truely master skills of handling- i am sure people will understand what i mean by that.
then after that start to get to grips with a fr car like a S14 etc.after doing this learn to try more advanced techniques then drift.
the problem is that people seem to think "Yeh mate, i like passed my tested innit, so like i can like go like drift like well nice innit." this is infact untrue.

sounds good, would have sounded better if it had come from someone who could actually drive.
