    MR2 Restoration begins....(56k not a chance)

Firstly apologies for the pics, but the £30 beer cam has yet to be mastered

    So....

Was when I picked it up.

Thats it back at base - Hope we've all spotted the ding in the back wing?

No surprises under there - good honest muck

Drivers seat needs a good clean - and those wires....... Any guesses?

So...... Whip off the skirts (fnar fnar) and lets see how far down the rabbit hole we're going to have to go....

O/S/R already been done - rest of the sill looks good

O/S/R rear quarter - common water trap; Not MOT failure, but its getting done.

Now THATS an MOT failure - But an easy repair

Should have fun welding it up, as long as the jap super underseal isn't hiding any more surprises.

I also have an '88 MR2. I'm going to wear blinkers the next time I get under it to change the oil, because now I know where to look I'd probably cry for a week.

Rave, get underneath and check now; These are the common places that MR2's go. Better to find it now when theres still some good metal to weld to than in 9 months time when you've no MOT.

    jiff :

a while ago there was a show on ch4 where some bloke spend 6 weeks or something doing up a mr2 on a budget. they did everything - locks, wheels, panels - you name it, they covered it. might be worth seeing if you can pick the series up on dvd?

Still not got any insurance unfortunately, so can't drive it round my mum's where there's a high kerb that's ideal for wriggling under the car. What do you use- ramps/axle stands?

I'll be really interested in the repair process anyway- do you just fabricate replacement bits from sheet steel and then weld them in with the car up on ramps? I should really pull my finger out and learn how to do it....

All the picks were taken with the car on the ground, so it's easy to check. Gentle tapping will soo reveal how good or bad the metal is.

As for repairing, it'll go up on axle stands, and Unky Si will no doubt cut some metal into cunning repair sections and stitch them in. I'm hopeless with metal; Can blunt drill bits without trying, cut wobbly lies in steel. He, however, can literally plait sawdust - You'll see when we do the repairs - Good welders make it look easy!

    Quick Update....

Not had much spare time but.....

Originally planned to restore the original alloys (they came with the car)

Little bit of work, but certainly do-able.

    They I found THIS one....

Lot of work involved there... and If you haven't already spotted it...

Into the big pile of bits to be ebayed they go!

So... thats 4x 5 spoke wheels, 4x original wheels, 2 sets of Xplod speakers found in the boot (too big for the car) and one pioneer sub.

Hopefully tomorrow sees the arrival of the rust killer and uber paint, in time for the weekend welding mission
