    GPS speeding prevention - reality

    http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/07..._car_tracking/

So much for driving your car then, before too long they'll drive themselves and the driver will be a thing of the past..

    Damn straight.

GPS shall navigate me, and it does a fine job, but it shan't drive my car for me.

What a load of crap. Grrr

If they are that keen on controling people why do they allow cars in this country that can go over 70mph. May as well just outlaw them altogether. The technology to limit engines has been around for years so why implement GPS speeding rubbish.

The system can be over-ridden to avoid a hazard but in normal circumstances drivers would not be allowed to go over a speed limit.
I'll keep that turned on then. Unless thats remotely controlled, in which case how long will it take for each and every hazard to be reported.

    This won't work!

I can see this going the same way as ID cards.

Each kit and installation is obviously going to cost, and it's not exactly going to be that cheap (probably at least £100-150). If they try and force the motorist to pay for the kit Labour will be out the door very rapidly, so the govt will have to pay for it all, with some enormous great total cost in the £bn range (like ID cards).

Not going to happen anytime doon

Furthermore, how are they going to enforce the usage? If it's anything like having a cat you'll have 7 days to plug it in again and get it verified!

And to take that idea to an extreme, what if everyone simply refused to use the system? What are they going to do... imprison every motorist in the country?

    Bye bye Labour

nah, what will happen is your insurance or tax will be 'discounted' by the cost of fitting if you have one... ie, read, if you don't it will go up by the cost of fitting.

It may save 1000 lives per year in accidents (that is if they have considered the loss of attention in drivers due to extreme boredom and apathy that such driving will cause). But what about all the keen motorists who will commit suicide after driving like that for a year? I suppose they could always move to live to a different country...

    actually

if more and more people visited track days, they would get cheaper and cheaper. thus track days might get down to, say, £20 a day, which imo would actually be a BETTER situation than today

besides, there are plenty of roads you can drive down at the speed limit and really really enjoy.

How many tracks are there in UK? Now if all the desperate drivers went there you'd have an m25 style jam round silverstone Also - if there is very high demand, prices may not drop that much if at all. It's a lot more hassle for the tracks to have more people around - you need to get more safety personel, etc...

And there is very little chance that new tracks would be built, unless its somewhere really remote, as not a single neighbourhood will let a noisy race track near their homes.

That is dangerous, what if you need to exceed the limit to get out of danger, and the car bangs on the breaks to slow you down?

Wonderful more control taken away from the drivers, this will cause more accidents than it avoids...

i dont personally think it would make more accidents happen. if no-one was speeding then you'd have no reason to accellerate beyond the speed limit to get out of danger, unless you had pulled a stupid overtaking manuvour in the first place.. speaking of which, there'd be less likelyhood of which cos theres no chance of the bloke coming the other way doing more than 60 anyways.

Its not just a case of people speeding, its people going unnessecerily slow as well, imagine, you go to overtake someone, u break the limit and the GPS slows ur car down leaving you stranded on the wrong side of the road.....
