    Engine design

I found these interesting page about how engine design affects the amount of vibration an engine makes:

    http://www.autozine.org/technical_sc...ne/smooth1.htm

But what I found particularly interesting was the last page about VW's VR and W engines:

    http://www.autozine.org/technical_sc...ne/smooth5.htm

I didn't understand how they were laid out before, now I do. The W12 especially looks amazing!

Actually the whole technical school section is packed with fascinating stuff. I now understand how the different kinds of VVT work, for example.

Enjoyed reading that Rave, nice find. Going to have to re-read some of it as its pretty complex but the W12 setup is very interesting..

Nah, the Cadillac Northstar was developed specifically for transverse FWD applications in 1992, and only adapted for RWD use a couple of years ago. A V8 is not much wider than an inline 4, so mounting them transversely is not hard. The S80 however has a transverse straight 6- that is quite impressive.

    ah now i see.

well the xc90 has one as well (straight 6 that is).. so it shouldnt be hard fitting a boxter 12 in it?

You could probably get a V12 into an XC90; if they make it with a V8 in the states and a straight six over here then there should be enough room in both directions. Boxer 12s are big though; only Ferrari have used them widely AFAIK (in the Testarossa etc.).
