Major problem with my nissan 200sx

Guys i need some major help here. Seems i have a problem that i thought was being caused by a leaking head gasket. Well i went and replaced it and had head done while i was at it. Well when i go to shift at higher rpm, above 4.5 grand, my engine seems to flurter to act like it has a rev limiter. It only acts like this when a "pull" is on the motor. It also has another problem that i dont think is related and that is my temp gauge goes up to bout 3/4 to tha hot mark then drops down to nothing then returns bout a minute or so later. Its an 85 nissan 200sx with the CA 2.0L engine.

Things i have checked or changed so far. Head gasket, t-stat and temp sensor, fuel filter, air leaks in intake system, compression test, and valve adjustments.

A couple of things, check the distributor cap for possible crack or moisture build up, also recheck all plug wires and coil to be on the safe side. It wouldn't hurt to pull the head again and check the gasket area as well as the head, if it wasn't properly tighten down you may have some leakage there. Next have you check the fluid level in the radiator, as you may have a crack in the block that could be part of the issue. The crack doesn't have to be large to create the problem you are discribing.

I aways check the basics, loose wires, includes grounds, hoses, belts, timing ect before getting to carried away.

i had checked all that stuff when i tore it apart tha first time. Both head and block, which i forgot to mention, were shaved down and checked for cracks. everything was torqued properly b/c i had done it myself, i remembered the last time i had someone torque a head down for me, even replaced the head bolts. New distributor cap, rotor, wires and plugs. Radiator is still full. Here is something i was thinking bout. Could tha ECM in it be tha cause IF it was goin/went bad. Thinking in terms of that since i remembered i had a hesitation in it before and my temp gauge is still acting up. Also all wires are in place and tight.

Oh i also noticed that it only does this when it is in gear and it does it in all gears, 5 speed standard if that helps any. I have 5 or so years of experience and this is tha first time i have come across something like this but i mostly know what i am doin with cars, lol, better with diesels though. Thank for ur time.

it does sound like an air leak to me. perhaps it is a problem with whatever sensors sort out the timing - that is the crank position sensor and the vacuum sensor/tps (or whatever is used in your car to retard the timing). the latter sounds more likely if its only happening at throttle down some way - it sounds like the ignition could be timing itself for the throttle up, and with the trottle down you are getting pinking (perhaps) becasue its not changing the timing accordingly.

I used to get a bit of a stutter on mine , I put it down to a slight boost leak combined with badly gapped plugs.

pop over to www.sxoc.com if you get really stuck ( but you might want to mention that you've got the Sr , not the CA - the CA is the 1.8 , unless you've had a stroker kit fitted )

    update

well guys here is where i am at this stage. I have finally narrowed it down to one of two possible things. Either i have fuel delivery issues or electrical problems. I just noticed on monday when i worked on it that it has a miss to it. Thinking its in number 4 cylinder not sure yet though, have to get a stethoscope to have a listen to it. Truthfully that would kinda suck if that is tha whole problem that i am having. Yami

P.S. Any farther thoughts on this would greatly help.

Check the simple stuff, if it is a boost leak could just have a hose that is loose or has a hole in....

    I am here just about!

I wont hazard a guess at anything, as i know that many american types of 200sx are actually completeley different from the ones sold over here and in japan, infact if i recall correctly, our 200sx (RWD coupe) is called the 240sx in america, and their 200sx is in fact a front wheel drive primera type car.

My best advice would be for Yami to head over to www.sxoc.com (which is a UK based 200sx owners club) and ask there.
