Picked up a copy of the '88 season review on VHS from a boot sale for 50p a few weeks ago, ohh RS500's . Was a bit gutted though as i also spotted the '91 and '92 reviews but forgot which stall they were on when i decided to go and get them...

That was really good, I'd forgotten quite how impressive the BTTC used to be, and quite what a loony Mr. Cleland was.

Ahh fond memories of proper touring cars!

Those Cossies seemed to be going faster (or at least as fast) as today's F1 machines do. Although that may well be an optical illusion caused by the narrow circuits. It seems that when anything approaching interesting power and speed comes along they emasculate it. Remember the Audi Quattro saloons? (not the rally ur-Quattros) In one race they started near the back of the grid, and to avoid the usual traffic jam they steered onto the grass, and accelerated past the rest who were still struggling for traction on the damp tarmac! When piling on penalty ballast for 4wd vehicles didn't work, they ended up just banning them outright.

The excuse they used for getting rid of turbos etc was that the cars were getting away from being real road vehicles. Unfortunately though, the feeble modern ones have racing sequential gearboxes (compared with the proper H-boxes with good old clutch pedals in the RS500), huge aerofoil wings (which would be dangerous on any road car) and totally different suspension!

Awesome - exactly how racing should be. Close, fast paced and totally down to who's got the most kahunas.
