Talking £3000, first car - Choices!

    Hi all

Time is here, for my first car Decisions decisions! I have a bulleted list below of what i am looking for, all suggestions would be welcome. What i am particularly after is What age of car i will be looking at? What are the main things i should look out for? Where should i be looking to buy from?

    Here is the specification:

    • Engine must be around a 1.2. 1.0 or 1.4's are at the lower and upper regions
    • Insurance is not an issue, because i will be a new driver my mum is taking the main cover and i am going as a driver
    • Looking for a newer shape car, rather than an older one with 'more' features
    • Essential is its reliable and respectable

Thats it really! All ideas welcome as said...

That engine size is going to infer a fairly small car...What about a Pug106 or 306?

You COULD buy a Jag for that.

Granted it'd be an 80's model but still

Have a look on Autotrader, see what comes up in your price range. There's loads to choose from in that price bracket.

You do realise that by going on your mums insurance, you wont build up a no claims bonus.

As much as I hate the blue oval, I'd say look for the newest fiesta/ka your money can get.

Cheap to run, Cheap to insure.

Girlfriend has just picked up a Brand new (03 reg) Ka for 5.5k.
Was cheaper to insure as her as the main driver on that than it was to have her as a named driver on her dads policy on an F reg fiesta!

Like Shad as said by going on your mums insurance you will not build up and NCB at all, and although you might be saving a few quid at the moment by doing this you will be paying for it as soon sa you wish yo insure a car your self.

Give it a couple of years and you will want a faster car and then you will get hit big time by the insurance company's.

If I were you I would get a car for around £1500 and spend the rest on the insurance and building up some NCB.

Once you have seen it you will never be the same

Cheers guys for the recommends, to answer the insurance question it goes like this -

I wouldn't feel confident on my own insurance its just to much responsibility. Also, my mum wants to drive the car occasionally to so we've gone for that way round, it will be better for us as a family

What about Rover 214's? I have had that suggested and it seems interesting!

Keep the ideas rolling in tho...

I'd suggest looking at the following cars:

    Renault Clio 1.4RT
    Peugot 106
    Citroen Saxo

Couple of Autotrader links for yo :

    1998 Clio 1.4RT 3Dr:

    1999 Citroen Saxo 1.2

Have a look on Autotrader, but remember, always check if it's being sold by a car dealer, OR if it is private, make sure it has FULL service history etc.

Um....too much responsibility? When you get in the car you have a responsibility to drive carefully, I don't see how the details of your insurance affect that. In some ways, you shouldn't avoid the responsibility of getting your own insurance. If for some reason the insurance company find out that in fact you are the main driver of the car rather than your Mum, they're entitled to refuse to pay out if you have an accident, and although I dislike insurance companies immensely, I wouldn't blame them. You should definately check to see what the price difference is between insuring you and naming your Mum, and vice versa. You might find there's very little difference, I know for a fact that adding my Mum onto my insurance didn't cost any extra. A NCB is a valuable thing. I suspect that increasingly insurance companies will require a NCB before they'll insure certain cars. I know Esure are finickity, but they won't insure me on my MR2 until I'm 30 and have 5 years NCB!

As for a car, there's some good suggestions already. Remember though that pretty much any car made since the mid-90s onwards will do well over 100k with no probs as long as it's maintained properly.

Ok, lets not get into a discussion over my insurance ok. I am getting this car firstly to take lessons building up to my 3rd driving test That will be talked about with my mum + dad who know what their insurance policy can offer them etc.

What i need is cars, and lots of suggestions. Bunji i like that Clio you posted but my m8 has one just like it and he would kill me if i got the same as him

For £3k will i be looking at a newer shape Clio rather than some of the first ones??

£3,000 is Clio Turbo territory but I wouldn't recommend it.
