NIGEL MANSELL = THE MAAAAAAAAN after all this time.

I have to now admit, again...that Top Gear actually entertained me last night.

What is the best thing in that show now?

The cinematography, production and camera work. Stunning shots, good plane sequences, top drive by's etc etc.

It's actual content is , as always, lacking, but the presentation is very good.

I think the 5m per car refers to all the development costs etc.

Personally, I'm completely unimpressed by it. It weighs nearly 2 tons FFS, a tuned skyline costing a tenth as much would spank it. Still, it's only putting out 125 BHP/litre ATM, I expect it's easily chippable to 1300+.

The reason why they cost £5m each is the vast amount of years spent by numerous highly paid technicians trying to put together the car. There may not be £5m worth of parts or technology in the car, but all the research and time needed to complete the car(s) have cost £5m each.

I think the Veyron, not only is a stunningly quick car, but it looks really really nice. Every fine detail has been thought through, and applied with such precision. I mean ffs, who would of thought to of had 10 radiators for the 2 engines. Where do you put them!! Also something else that stunned me... £4,500 for an indicator stalk!! WTF!

Still... if you have the budget... why not? Like Clarkson says, it's sad in a way because you will never see anything as quick or as powerful as the Veyron - ever.

You wont get a skyline to do 252mph though.

Haha, have you seen the clip of a Skyline vs a McLaren F1 road car? Top Gear did it a few years ago. The skyline was made to look silly.

Clarkson said on last nights Top Gear. You could let the McLaren F1 road car get up to 100mph and then start off in the Veyron, and the Veyron would still beat the McLaren to 200mph...

    Now that's insane.

Yes but that was a standard skyine with only 276bhp. Throw just £2000 at one and you have more like 400bhp instead. In that situation the Mclaren F1 wont get away quite so easily

There are 1000bhp skylines floating around, there are quite a few in the UK as a matter of fact. The heavy veyron would struggle in a stright line against a 1400-1500kg car with 1000bhp.

I think the top gear race was a tuned skyline vs mclaren F1. Also, i bet you a tuned skyline will never be as fast as that veyron. Weight can have it advantages....for example keeping it planted for 2.5s whilst it gets to 60mph

I don't think that a 1000BHP Skyline could compete with a Veyron. Remember that a Skyline is basically designed as a 300BHP car (detuned to 276BHP for the Japanese market). Yes, it can be made to develop 1000BHP but it's not a car that is designed from the ground up to run at 1000BHP. You can tinker with uprated suspension, clutch, gearbox, tyres etc. But there would be very little mechanical grip at those power levels.

The Veyron is designed from the ground up to run at 1000BHP. How long would the engine and transmission components of a 1000BHP Skyline last at full throttle?

    I wouldn't say no to a 1000BHP Skyline though!

Bollocks will it. That Veyron is untouchable.

Erm...nope. It was designed for Japanese Group A racing. The engine can do 500BHP on its standard internals; the standard crank will take 1000BHP as long as you fit Nismo bearings.

Tuned Skylines can do the quarter in well under 10s. I agree it's an apples to pears comparison, but I still think the Veyron is too fat and way too complicated.

Would you drive a tuned skyline from North of Italy to London in a day and enjoy it too?

And what would your girlfriend like more?

Don't forget its a plush car as well as being fast! Iirc its fine to drive slow too. A 1000bhp skyline through a city or through gridlock? No thanks.

The Veyron also has a whopping great quad turbo engine with about 60 ft-tonnes of torque.. Refinenement and not much revving or effort required (and maintenance!) to reach insane speeds

Totally missing the point. It's probably not too hot for towing a caravan either.
