I found last nights TG very entertaining again. But, I think Clarkson is almost overpowering now - let's have more from the other two. It was good to see Nigel Mansell showing how a car is meant to be driven around the test track. We need more normal cars, after all how many people can afford a Bugatti? Lovely car though! Not bad for a VW.

I enjoy TG because of the stupid cars. I really don't think seeing the latest Corsa trundle round a high street is entertainment. If I want to buy a new car I will buy one of those dull mags.

Yeah, I know it's got the bhp meter, but the needle moving was CGI, it was painfully obvious.

I noticed that too. Was a bit tacky and overused. Shame it didn't go on the track. The rest of the show was good though. Only other thing - what time did they start their journey? Was it as early as possible? It was quite light... Maybe if they had more time the plane would reach UK before sunset.

The needle looked like it was an LCD display.. Is that not how the dials in the Veyron work?

Add me to list of people that are dissappointed that the Veyron didn't get launched round the track (sent email demanding to know why not )

Also still think it was a tad unfair putting that monster up against the wittle Cessna....

Because he was/is a far better driver.

His rivalry with Prost and Senna was pretty much the only reason I was hooked on F1 at the time, because he was quite simply breathtaking to watch, and the lap in the cheap Suzuki showed exactly why, sometimes untidy, not as clinical and perfect Senna, but gutsy as hell. Murray Walker commented on an overtaking maneuver he performed in an underpowered Ferrari at Hungary the year before he came back to Williams as one of the best he'd ever seen.

I remember seeing himself and Senna having to be carried out of their cars after Monaco in 1992 through sheer exhaustion.

The bloke is an absolutre living legend and one of the most talented and hard working drivers this country has ever seen.

James May should have got an FAA licence like me, that would have let him fly in the dark!

Alternatively he could do a 'night-rating' on his JAA licence...

They probably weren't allowed to. It is a £860,000 car after all. Remember the Enzo? Took em ages to be able to do a lap in it.

Anyways, awesome show, and what a car, totally incredible.

i heard this was not the case. I know we all thought it to be a huge, heavy and lumbering thing around corners but apparantly everyone has been shocked by how well it can take them. Clarkson, despite him getting carried away described it as a lotus elise in terms of cornering ability. Not for one second i believe this but i reckon its not half-bad.

I too was disappointed by the lack of feel we got for the car, and the faked bhp meter got me too (yes i know its real but it certainly wasnt the actual meter going to 1000). The run to norway was the best of these races, you actually got more of a feel for the SLR than any of the other cars including the fat ferrari and the DB9, plus he went on the autobahns

The meter went to 1001 but they didnt take the engine to it. My bet is that they just filmed and showed the startup 'system test' sequence.

    strange fact,

some of the performance cars are not allowed around top gear/5th gear personal/hired test tracks due to insureance reasons.

    example (not factual example)

Ferrari give BBC top end car -
insurance for clarkeson on public road (car+presenter+crew) 5k
Same situation on private test track - 15k

some cars they will just not insure on the track due to the fact that they are far more likley to thrash them and have a high speed accident on the track due to the relativly lesser speeds (even though still fast) on the public roads

Other manufactures will not allow their car on the track as its the only one, or they are scared to have their claims proved wrong.
    It is Inevitable.....

I heard this at the end of the episode, so are they trying to say that these things cost £5 million to make EACH and they are selling them at a loss of £4.2 million per car ?

I don't believe that they make £5m to make, firstly they wouldnt make as many individual cars as they are and secondly they'd sell them for more. I'm sure the sort of people buying a £860k car can afford a £2m car
