Can you get a Mondeo for that price? Do you mind getting something older?

406 hdi diesels are supposed to be very good. 406 seems to be a very good car by itself too (according to parkers anyway). I was looking at estates for my dad and theres a lot of them at 2-3k some with decent mileages. If you don't mind a saloon it will be even cheaper.
Tough on mirrors, tough on the causes of mirrors.
I did a search on Autotrader for £2K cars.
You can get some nice motors but with 100K+ miles on them. Here's a list of those that I would buy if it was my dosh at exactly £2K:
- 1993 BMW 3 SERIES 320i 2dr Coupe, 115,000 miles
- 1992 BMW 3 SERIES 325i SE 4dr Auto Saloon, 117,000 miles
- 2000 MAZDA 626 1.8 GXi 5dr Hatchback, 90,685 miles
- 2000 FORD Mondeo 1.8 GLX, X reg. petrol
- 1995 M Reg VOLKSWAGEN Golf 2.0 GTi
- 1994 MERCEDES-BENZ C CLASS C180 Elegance 4dr Auto Saloon, 112,000 miles
- 1999 V Reg FORD Mondeo 2.0i Ghia X
- 1998 HONDA ACCORD 1.8i LS 4dr Saloon, 90,000 miles
- 1996 BMW 3 SERIES 318i SE 4dr Saloon, 102,000 miles
- 1995 VOLKSWAGEN GOLF, 2.0 GTi 16v
- 7 R Reg FORD Mondeo 1.8i Verona
- 1996 N Reg SAAB 900 2.0i S
Watch out for the belt of you go with a high milage VAG Diesel. They have a love of throwing them 10,000 before their service intervals.
My dad has a 2.0HDI 406, was a very nice car. Extremely quiet, i know that phrase is thrown around alot about diesels but this really was, not like the mondeo TDCI we have now. An excellent motorway cruiser, returned 41mpg even around town. Oh and ours was an estate.
It had done about 115k by time we got shut of it, had a few niggles but mostly stuff that will eventually go anyway (water pump, cam belt pulleys - which sound terminal on the HDI), nothing serious though.
If you are of the inclination, there are a fair few bargains to be had at car auctions. Lots of turbodiesels are ex-rental or ex-company cars with full service history. They also tend to arrive in bulk which helps push the price down.

Mondeo 1.8TD engine is crap. 2.0 16v much better, does over 40mpg on Motorway. Not economical around town.

It breaks all the time, it gives me a bad back within thirty seconds and the windows take ten or eleven years to demist.
Mind you, can't be any worse than the 306 diesels.
