    Renault Megane Coupe - Pointers?

    Hi'a Guys n Gals...

Well following on from my Golf accident drama, I finally have my insurance money and tonight Im going to view a Renault Megane 1.6e Sport II Coupe.
Im after pointers... what do I need to be looking out for? Does anyone know of any general faults that occur with these? Ive already asked about the cambelt and if that hasnt been done then I'll have to be doing it, but any pointers of areas and bits and pieces that often cause problems will be much appreciated!

    Thanks people...

    Jen

What year is it? One of the worst performing cars in a reliability survey where they not?

I remember there being a specific electrical fault on some of them which caused it to stall when coming to idle.

www.coupe-club.co.uk will have some info on the forums. I have a 1.6e hatchback which is probably essentially the same underneath minus a few differences. Can't remember any known faults off hand though

I've got one (for sale) and they're not bad motor really.. No real problems with them despite what Konan is saying (pretty sure he's thinking about the Laguna).

Check for the usual things - fluid levels etc (gives you an idea how well it's been looked after), water in oil etc, rust around the rear arches, bad panel joins or dents. They're usually a little tappety on start up so don't be worried about that. The exhausts sometimes knock a bit because the exhaust mountings on Megane's are useless. Brakes should feel like you're about to hit the windscreen everytime you touch the pedal since they're really 'overservo'd'. If you don't, they need looking at...

How much is it going for and what year is it?

Its an R plate up for £1195

The guy has it as a part ex and it sounds like it needs some tlc. Apparently it would do well from a good valet and a t-cut but Im up for that. It looks ok from the pics. Its done 88k.

thats not a bad price - i'd think you can probably haggle another £1-200 off that.. might be worth getting an aa inspection if you're worried though.

Doubt you'd get much more off that really, that's a really good price unless it's an absolute banger.

That is good... Unless it really needs some maintenance and TLC. ALways try haggling though

The reliability thing was just down to a public survey, no personal experiance there.

Cheers people, been and had a look and its alright. Not massively taken by it and its also the first car Ive been to look at.
It was a good car for the money tho. Had some history but nothing about the cam belt. 1 tyre needs replacing, back box will need doing soon, MOT runs out in March and Tax next month so it does need a little money throwing its direction. There was also a bit of oil sitting on the manifold which was a bit concerning - could be nothing but it didnt look as though it was coming from the oil filter.

Anyway - dealer said I can have it for £1100 which is good Im just not sure its for me.

Howard, how do you get on with your Megane Hatch?

Coupes are very stylish cars in my opinion.. They do look nice

I can't complain about my hatch really.. It will need a new backbox sometime soon as well as it's started blowing slightly.. And a new catalytic converter in the future. Other than that it's great. Nice and comfy

to be fair - i'd be dubious - a dealer knows EXACTLY how much he can get for a car.. if its so cheap.. might be something wrong with it??

We have a couple in to work on and they do look quite nice. Not that nice inside though...i don't know what it is but i just don't like the 'feel' of them somehow, saying that the one is a total shed so perhaps i'm not test driving the best examples...

Maybe if your heart isn't in it - don't buy it. At least look at other cars first. No point buying something you don't like that may turn out dodgy on top of that. I for one don't see anything special in old meganes, coupe or not.

You shouldn't see oil on the manifold. Why? Cos there should be a ruddy great heatshield covering it. Sounds like it's going cheap for a reason...
